| Thinking of buying a belt baler, and was wanting everyones opinion on the hesston 5540 baler the one i'm looking at will need new belts. as of right now i run the new holland chain balers. what size does the 5540 make? and is it a reliable baler or is it a constant battle in the hay field? I like the chain balers as they bale whatever they can get in there stomach. but there slow. any help would be appreciated can get this hesston at right price just didnt know if it would speed process up and what size bale it would produce. |

I have a Hesston 5530. It makes a bale 39" wide, up to 54 inches in diameter, IIRR. Your 5540 likely makes a bale a little wider. Chief things to look for are the pickup bars being bent (the p/u teeth won't make a line, when you look at them) These bars are subject to bending from hitting rough ground. Also, to start a bale, you run across the ends of a few windrows, at right angles, till you see the bale start spinning. Belts are pretty cheap, I got mine from hammond equip, fawnsdale ala. The newer balers (540 would likely be the son of 5540) use a better twine cutting system, than the old ones(you can't run plastic twine, in the old ones). I have had my 5530 for 10+ years, been a good machine, and sure beats bucking square bales. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask, talk is cheap...

I run a 5500 Hesston. It makes 5 X 5 bales and uses plastic fine. I don't do anything special to start a bale, just line up with the windrow and go. ------------- AC 7045 AC 190XT with Gleaner L engine Hesston, New Holland and New Idea hay equipment OK, so what's the speed of dark? |
