Hi there,
I am the proud new owner of a 912H. It currently does not run but is in damn good condition considering I only paid $250. It needs an ignition switch and battery, as well as a few other small parts.
Problem is, I can't seem to find out exactly which ignition switch I need. If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd be very thankful!

Thanks! Ordered it from Amazon for $10.

Just one more question (so far) lol, I'm having some trouble figuring out what battery to buy. I know the service manual, etc call for a 12V 45AH battery, I'm seeing a ton of 12V 35AH but no 45s. Does it matter?
Thanks again!!

I have been using lawn and garden batteries with no problems. You can pick one up at any parts house, tractor supply etc. The last one i bought was $30 to $35 and was around 280 cranking amps. Just note which side of the battery you want the hot side on. The models with the R behind it has the + and - reversed. They come with square post on them so i have changed battery cables to match. You could also by the adapters that make a square terminal to a round post.

Ok cool. Sounds perfect. Mine has the circle adapters. Do by any chance know the deck belt number? Haven't gotten that far yet, but may as well ask while we're at it.
Thanks!

Here is what is listed on the decal under the hood. You could probably cross reference them to another belt.
I can check my list of belts when i get back later.

Air filter and pre cleaner is this if you have a Kohler 12 hp engine:                                  100-040 Use with 100-750 Pre-Filter

This is Stens brand.
This is what I have on my 12 hp Kohler.
I even went out and measured it to be sure.

Awesome. Thanks very much. I actually found the air filter after I posted. Now, another newb question...
What is the easiest way to change and flush the oil? It's been sitting around for over a year and I would like to flush everything once I get it started.

someone before you must have added that 48" deck,i think 912's all came with the 42" deck according to original brochures, the 48" was started with the 916,along with wider rear rims and tires.

if you have a 42" deck, the belt number is 248-084
It's 1/2 x 84.

I have a 712 S and a 914 Hydro. Both had 42" decks.

It's definitely a 48" deck. I really wanted a 712 Hydro, that's what my father had when I was a boy. Settled for the 912 for now. Hopefully I can find a 712H and sell this one at some point. Would love to fully restore 712, top to bottom.

Irlbeck:
Thanks for posting your decal pic as my hood didn't have that under it.
So, I just copied it to a pic and saved it to look up the numbers on Sten's site and then go look up my price in their catalog.
Much appreciated!

Well Irlbeck,
I stand corrected. It's there on my 914 Hydro with the top numbers missing, but it says at the top of the decal "For 7100 Series".
The decal is not under the hood on my 712S.

Ok, so after installing a new switch, new battery, cables and spark plug...she didn't make a squeak with the key. Traced all connections with a voltameter and discovered no power coming from the starter solenoid. The motor turns when jumped straight from the battery. Would a universal 3 pole solenoid work? I haven't seen anything that resembles the one I took out, at least not new.
Thanks!

You're welcome Jim. Glad to help.

Do you have power to the lights or elsewhere?
You may want to check the circuit breaker or the connections on the breaker. Looking from the front of the tractor, It is a small rectangle box mounted on the wall below and to the left of the solenoid. It will have 2 wires coming out of it.

Sure sounds like it could be the circuit breaker. I have had them go bad or the post corrode off. The wire usually has a sleeve type connector that pushes on the threaded post. You can loose connection there as well. Some folks will cut the sleeve off and put a connector on the end and tighten it with a nut on the post.
The last breaker I bought was at oreillys auto. It was around $3 but the thing i liked was that is was built here in the USA by Littelfuse. Can't buy many things that are built here anymore.

Yeah you are right there Craig ma' man! Its gettin' tougher and tougher. We handle a lot of electrical components from Littlefuse mainly because its USA made. So far we've been dartin' that Chinese crap! As Craig mentioned, all power comes in through the circuit breaker from the Battery. The wiring around the engine area gets so brittle from the heat, that you may have a break somewhere, or like Craig said, corrosion is a big factor on these old Garden Tractors, especially if they were left out in the rain during their life span...

To add to the Battery question, I use the small Gell Batteries where you don't have to worry so much about the acid removing the paint off your Tractor especially after putting a nice paint job on them. The group number is a U1 which is used for wheelchairs & recreational equipment. You can pick em' up at Napa to. Their P/N is 8228 I believe.

I typed in Simplicity solenoid on their site and this is what came up:

435-435 , 435-099 , 435-032

It didn't bring up anything when I typed in Allis Chalmers solenoid.

here's their main site: www.stens.com

Thanks guys! From what I'm reading, any 3 pole solenoid should work. Steve, I can't find anything that looks similar to the breaker in my tractor. I'll post pics of what's in there as soon as I figure out how lol.

Here is where the circuit breaker is located.

Here is a picture of the circuit breaker. One of the post had corroded off.

Ok, that's where I thought it was. I'll have to dig it out of there this weekend. Does anyone have a parts number for one? I'm pretty sure once that gets replaced, as well as the solenoid she'll start right up. Thanks a million guys!

Talk to Steve at b&b or go to an auto parts store. They make a universal 20A breaker that will replace it. It will have 2 threaded studs and a single hole on the side for mounting it.
You may have just a bad connection with the wires to and from the breaker.

Make sure all your pulleys and blades are ok
and that they spin freely. Inspect the mower drive belt and clean any trash of the top of the deck.
It's not hard to install the deck.
Turn the wheels hard right. Lower the lift handle fully and pull lift cable down. Slide the deck under the tractor from the left side.
Attach lift cable to top of deck. Lift deck with hand lift. Attach the front 2 pins on front of deck to the mounts under the front of the tractor. Attach the belt to the deck and to the drive pulley on the left side of tractor. The belt goes on the inside groove of the pulley on the tractor. The belt tensioner is a black handle located by the left rear wheel. Pull up to tension belt and down to release tension.
The oil capacity is about 2 quarts. Just drain and fill with new oil.
If you need a manual you can download one at bsintex.basco.com   Just do a Google search for allis 900 series manual.

Ok guys, she moves!! I just need need some advice on adjusting the carburetor and fuel. Goes for a minute or less then seems to putter out.

Posted By: Jim Hancock
Date Posted: 12 Jul 2015 at 6:44pm
Screw the idle mixture screw in all the way and back out 1.5 turns and the high speed needle valve screwed out 2 turns out from bottom.
Set your idle screw to a medium idle- not fast/or slow- then adjust your idle mixture valve until it smooths out by finding the midway point between too rich and too lean. Then you may be able to slow the idle down a little to a lower idle speed without it flooding out.
Now, open it up to full throttle and adjust the high speed needle valve to the midway point between too rich and too lean for a smooth sound and speed.
Check your tank for trash and/or rust plugging your drain.
You may need to change the condensor and points if you can't restart it immediately and have to wait for it to cool off.
One more thing: Use non ethanol gasoline if you can.  HTH.

So, now it won't start at all. Seems to be having trouble getting fuel, as it will fire up for a few seconds when I use starter fluid. The fuel seems to be flowing in and out of the pump just fine. Any ideas?

also check valve timing for a broken cam those old cams are starting to break alot but will go in and out of time because there is a shaft through them  that keeps them from falling in to two pieces    have seen them shear and run and then stop then it moves and then maybe fit back in place agian and run agian for a while
