I have just picked up a AC hd4 and found when loading that when I first started the machine moved fine but as it warmed up a little bit it didn't want to move anymore. I could let it idle for a minute and put it back in gear and would go another 40 feet. Any ideas how to test so I can repair. Also what fluids go where? ATF under right foot is what it looks like, what about the shuttle is that the dipstick under seat? What does it take? I put 46 weight in the hydraulics. I really like this machine and am willing to put some money into it if I can figure out what it needs and any help would be appreciated. Thanks John

| CHECK THE SHUTTLE FLUID LEVELS. WHEN MY HD4 BEGINS TO ACT UP I ADD A GALLON OF FLUID TO SYSTEM. I BUY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AT WALL MART IN THE OIL SECTION. COST 11 DOLLARS PER GALLON. I HAVE A LEAK THAT I HAVE NOT GOTTEN AROUND TO FIXING. MIGHT BE YOUR TYPE OF PROBLEM ALSO. |

| THE FILL CAP BY THE RIGHT FOOT IS FOR THE SHUTTLE CLUTCH TORQUE HOUSING. THE FILL TUBE UNDER THE SEAT IS FOR THE TRANSMISSION/REAR END WHICH USES A GEAR OIL. I USE 80 WEIGHT FOR TRANS/REAR END AS WELL AS FINAL DRIVES. A REPAIR MANUAL IS A NEEDED BOOK TO HELP YOU. |

| Thanks for the reply, I have check the torque fluid but noticed the dipstick is modified with another set of marks. How long should this dipstick be and how far up are the true marks. This is the one under right foot I'm talking about. Also what are the two levers by your heels one on each side. I can't seem to find the serial number either, should be up front under grill but mine shows nothing there. Can it be found anywhere else on machine? |

| I WOULD ADD A GALLON OF FLUID TO THE TORQUE HOUSING AND SEE HOW IT DOES. TRACY IS RIGHT ON THE TWO LEVERS BEING BRAKE LOCKS. MANY TIMES THEY GET UNHOOKED AND DO NOT WORK. CHECK ON THE FRONT OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER TUBE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE JUST BEHIND THE OIL FILTER. THERE IS A FLAT SPOT ON THE TORQUE HOUSING WHERE IT BOLTS TO THE ENGINE BLOCK. THAT IS WHERE THE SERIAL # IS ON MY HD4 DOZER AND LOADER. |

if I remember the marks on dip stick are hot / cold marks . Check level with machine running - believe with it in fwd / rev engaged . looking at upper center track idler - cant tell if it's there I used 10/30 motor oil in hyd system / Type A - ATF in shuttle - torque converter. ------------- Faith isn't a jump in the dark. Thanks for all the replies, yes it is missing support roller. I might just make something for it since it wont see many hours around the yard. I found the number 1649 on the torque housing. I also picked up a pail of ATF for the shuttle, I will fill to proper level and report back with the results. If it still acts up then maybe I can do some pressure tests and narrow the problem. | Well I added some atf to the torque/shuttle and she ran great so far. I have only ran it for an hour or so but, was running in 2nd gear with no slippage after an hour so maybe can focus on the leaking cylinders. Thanks for everyones input and I'm sure I be lurking around and asking questions in the future. What kind of dollar are these machines going for now days? I'm not looking to sell but if I could upgrade to a backhoe in the future I would. |

I have a AC 615 backhoe that will drop right into your tool holder on that machine . Came off my HD4 when I sold it . 14' hoe with 24" bucket . 2 stick unit - It Draws power through divert valve put into line to present valve body for loader ------------- Faith isn't a jump in the dark. | Coke, what would you need for that backhoe? I'm only 4-5hrs away on the canadian side about 20 minutes from international falls. I'm more looking for a wheeled machine but you got me interested. That backhoe might make my machine more appealing for resale for a cabin owner or someone like that. My grandfather just sold a 450c with a backhoe however I'm not sure what he got for it, he sure did have a big smile when we were talking about it. May I ask what you sold your hd4 for? I'm just trying to evaluate my options. |

Hello again, Ive been around but not posting much. I thought I would revive this thread since my HD4 is still acting up when warm but seems to happen much quicker now. I added some ATF +4, I know type A was mentioned but I had +4 on hand. Could this contribute to the slippage? Should I dump whats in there and start over with A type. It slips in all gears F and R, I have some gauges and can test if I knew where to tap in.
Also my injectors are leaking from upper O-rings I assume, It is running down manifold and making a mess. Is there a Injector re-seal kit of some kind? or will I have to just size them up and hope for the best. One other thing I would like to ask about is the heat gauge. I can't seem to find anything that will work at the engine end. All of the temp gauges I have were to small on the fitting end. Just wondering if someone has made a aftermarket gauge work? At one time I considered selling this thing but now I've made 2 attachments for it. One is a 14" auger and the other is a wood splitter and both are run off the 3rd valve on bank, So I think I may have it for the long haul and would be nice to fix it up as much as I can afford. I've already rebuilt the 2 tilt cyls, I think it cost less than $50 and have enough parts to do a couple more. find a repair manual and check the pressure settings on fwd- rev clutch pack - could be converter also ???? but would say clutches - there is also a hyd filter in system for that circuit. Are clutches available? And quite honestly with the extra marks on my dipstick I'm still not 100% sure its not a fluid level issue. Here is a pic does this look like the correct stick. I will also try some lucas trans fix while I'm waiting on reply about dipstick |

A hot and cold mark for fluid - running or engine off . Yes the parts are out there for clutch pack - cople individuals on here can find them for you or have them - can check with Minpar in Mpls also of what they still stock . The Service Manual for the HD4 contains information needed to check the hydraulic pressure in the power shuttle and torque converter - recommend starting there before considering disassembly. Good Luck with this project - Orangeman
