After putting the front of my 175 back together and getting the engine running, I find out that the front crank seal has a pretty good leak.
Is it possible to replace the front seal without taking off the timing cover on the 248 Perkins? I suspect that the oil pan needs to be removed to take off the timing cover. I would like to avoid that if possible since I already put a new pan gasket on!
Maybe it would be best to replace both the crank seal AND timing cover gasket while I am at it?

It can be done. The crankshaft pulley can be hard to get off though. It torques way up there. I made a driver to install the seal square to the crankshaft. Make sure you get a good original lip seal. I tried several dealers and parts places before finding one. The depth of the seal is critical,if not deep enough it will rub the radius on crankshaft pulley,and prematurely fail. Before removing pulley, measure a known spot so you can position seal correctly. If you are lucky, you can put the new seal the same depth of old seal, and it run in right spot.This is a good time to check the drive on hyd. pump also. HTH Tracy
