So first post on here, hoping to get some advice. Trying to get a G running thats been sitting for about a year and a half. There are a lot of variables right now and its not starting, but my biggest concern is that when I crank it, oil shoots out of the air cleaner(Ive got the hood off). Wondering what that indicates, so that I can take care of that and keep working towards getting it running. I just replaced the ground cable and it started cranking a lot stronger...but also shooting the oil bath about 5 feet high in the air. Any advice would be great. Definitely a novice, but I can give more info if needed.

I did have to reset the timing and am not sure if I did it correctly. Could that be the cause?

Sounds like you either have an intake valve stuck open or the valves are out of time. I'm not familiar with the Continental engine, but might be ya have to take the head off to find and fix the problem. I wouldn't think ignition timing can't make it blow out the intake, unless it actually fires on the intake stroke. Valve timing being off could let it fire with the intake valve open.

Perhaps a stupid question, but is the starter original? (Is it turning the engine the right direction)?
