Hello all, Im new to the forum a new to allis chalmers. Im in need of some advise. i acquired a D17 series IV and literally drug out of the woods. the previous owner quit using one day when it wouldn't start and there is sat for years until me. the motor wasnt stuck and for the most part complete. But i can't seem to get it to crank(even on starting fluid). its got new coil points and condenser, rebuilt the carb, plugs and wires look to be correct and in good order, power at the coil and to points.??? does anyone have any ideas what I'm over looking???? Second I've never fooled with positive ground equipment before this tractor has been converted to alternator and does that mean that it was converted to negative ground as well? and what other issues could going from pos ground to neg cause?

With an alternator on it, chances are it is a negative ground now.  However, switching between positive and negative ground is very easy.  Switch the battery cables around, switch the wires on the back of the ammeter, and switch around the 2 small wires on the coil and you are done. You say you can't get it to crank.  Does this mean that the starter is not turning the engine over?  Have you checked the battery and cleaned the connections (and ground contact)?

Do you have 12 volts at the lead wire to the coil?
