| to Gleaners! dang have ya been following prices on the heads lately! I need a IH cornhead real bad...and anything close is outta the price ranges I can ever afford! PfffffT! sad that you can buy the whole combine cheaper than just one head! I know it's the wrong time of year...but have been looking since mine broke on that steel post someone lost tied to a corn stalk last year! |

I don't know much about corn heads, nor the prices they fetch, but a fence post ruined the whole head? The blacksmiths near the Blair bridge can't fix her up, Shameless?

I know what you mean about the prices ! I bought my Gleaner A just for the front tires as they fit the D-14s. It was too good of condition to scrap,so now it does 300' of rye every year.Yes three hundred feet, that's all. Wife thought I was nuts buying it, yeah, she's right, they're always right... | nope Les...they don't have a clue about corn heads...the steel post went clear in to the top of the row, took the gear box and chains, and bent a bunch of stuff. last time I had a welding job down at that place it took them almost a year to do it! I kept checking with them, finally had to go buy another machine while waiting for them! Cargill has them tied up all the time! the shop foreman there told me they get right at $200,000. each month from Cargill! |

Out here, the premium for John Deere and International stuff is nuts! Is there an adapter that you could run to use a different head? I don't know if it would save anything, but it's a thought. |

A good Gleaner head isn't cheap either..... A good 6 row Hugger head that is field ready will bring $8-10k around here. I just watched a 4 row Hugger sell for $4500 at an auction and that needed new snapping roll blades! Keep your chin up Shameless, the right deal will come along! Andy

Fence posts and corn heads tend to not get along. It took my tenant half a day to fix his leased corn head after a hire hand harvested a post with an end row. His hired hands (both of them) took it apart while he drove 100 miles each way to get the parts. Then it worked good on my farm. Sometimes structural patches can be made of stock angle and channel and be bolted in place when welding isn't handy. And some tin work is more decoration than function, and working tin work can be adjusted with hammer and wooden post or anvil to get it to a functional shape though it might not look great. That's why those big green STS machines are known a "Single-Trip-Seeders" Around here they generally have a crop ready and growing before they spray it off with roundup. |
