I have acquired a HD6G Crawler Loader from a brother who has passed, the Tracks, rollers everything is in good shape so I'm told. It has two issues. The Engine knocked. We purchased a good new engine, removed the old engine, and will install if I can get the tracks unlocked. Both tracks are locked solid. Thinking it froze up as it has been sitting for three plus year, we hooked it up to a very large tree harvester and pulled it 75 feet and both tracks just skidded. That was Nov 6 2014,and have not done anything since. My question is can the steering clutches rusting up cause the tracks to lock solid?, or is it in gear? or what?
My brother was the mechanic, and it seems too nice to sell for scrap iron. (he had installed new clutches but that was 8 yrs. ago? and it really hasn't been used since.
Or should I sell it for scrap iron?
Any ideas would be appreciated.Thanks

Everyone needs a project - take it on .

tracks frozen could be a lot of things - pull the steering clutch levers back and try , engine master clutch should be in neutral and trany in neutral for test of roll as well as be shre brakes are released and not locked down .

I agree with coke and fix it. had a hd6 that wouldn't roll because the brakes were adjusted too tight. Also had 2 hd5's that were a pain to move. found out a shift fork broke off and they were stuck in gear.

I also would vote for fix it, but PLEASE do not melt it. Should you decide against repair at least sell it to someone else to repair or sell parts from it so another machine may live.

Another vote for fix it. If you remove the drive shaft and pull it again. If the track moves the problem is with the motor. I had a crawler that I thought was locked up. I found that mice had built a nest in the flywheel housing. When I tried to start it the starter gear jammed the flywheel ring gear. I did a lot of work on the motor before I found the starter motor was jammed.

If the tracks are locked with the drive shaft removed you could also have the transmission stuck in 2 gears

Check that brake drum is not rust to brake band.

Fix it. Sounds like it's in to good of shape to go to the scrapers.

Is it possible that tracks have rusted solid or something out side of clutch- trans case?

J Erickson, Just wait till it is warm out, you might have water in a final/s or transmission.

3 years shouldn't stop them that fast, but... I have an HD6 I bought awhile ago and soaking it trying to get steering clutches to come loose...

hi everyone! Can anyone help Please, Left brake is stuck to the floor and the catch rod is not even connected to the hold lever just wondering if there is an easy fix or do i need to tear into the differential ?

Remove the floor panel and follow the linkage. Remove the clevis pins on the brake pedal to see if the brake pedal is frozen at the pivot. Next see if the brake actuating rod is free. If it is frozen then there is a bellcrank in the steering clutch compartment that actuates the brake band. It is easiest to work on if you remove the fuel tank. As crawler repairs go this should be easy.

There is no differential. The steering clutches are used for turning. turning

if I had to guess the brake bands are stuck to the drums. if one side is stuck it could keep both from turning if the steering clutches are engaged. remove the small adjuster covers under the fuel tank and back off the adjuster about 2-3 full turns. tie the steering clutches back and pull it again and see if either turns. if it runs, try easing the clutch forward and reverse. I had tracks on a hd5g freeze up in about 3 years from not sitting but a short tug and they started turning. my steering clutches were already removed. good luck, sounds like a good machine to fix.
