| Sam, The dead boat pulls arround our area of NY. is basicly a long flat sled with a load of dirt piled on it . Each person hooks to the boat and pulls it 20 feet. ( that is considered a full pull.) If everyone pulls it the 20 feet, they add more dirt ( usually with a bucket tractor) they keep doing this till someone pulls it the fatheset in any given round. This takes a while to do. We even had to put tractors on the sled once when the bucket tractor diddent show up. |

| The title didnt come up the first time (dont know why) a buddy of mine filmed it. Ive seen it thats why i was wondering. If you look up the videos by rmpruitt you will be impressed, he does a great job. He doesnt hardly miss a pull anywhere within about 4 or 5 hours from here. (SWOH-SEIN) Most are on youtube. |

Our county fair used to have a boat with weights. Then they got volunteers to sit in chairs along the track. As the tractor went by,each guy would step on the boat to add weight.

I will be at GOTO and had hopes they were going to have a sled for the pull and see some folks roll some coal.

These are common in horsepulls and although the track gets torn up, but not to this extent. In Clay City, Indiana about 45+ years ago I remember seeing these at the Clay City community park on concrete. It was also done by adding weight after each round. Pretty slow but at least they did not tear the ground up.
Horse pulls in Michigan and other states have what they call machine pulls but not like progessive machines in tractoe pulls at all ! Jim

I finally watched about half the video. That's just plain stupid. A couple guys that were actually moving the boat(weren't driving Green) were stopped before they spun out. If the boat stops moving forward, why keep spinnin your wheels? Maybe the object was to see who could dig the deepest hole faster.

| Well, I'm not sure I understand the object of this activity......if it's just to dig holes, I think the green ones won. However, if it was to move the weight laterally, I think the red ones had a slight edge, but, only a slight edge. Now, if it was to loosen the soil for planting...........very inefficient, but I guess the land owner won |

Most of the pulls around central New England are of this type. We shut down anyone who starts digging up the track like that. I'm guessing that the pull in that video was running according to a set of rules that are unfamiliar to me - doesn't make it wrong, though.

The video Ted showed above dramatically shows the difference between a good track and a not so good track (the video I posted). And I will tell you I have seen a lot more tractors pulled off the track of a distance pull on a chain than compered to dead weight.

| They used to use the old stone boat at the NY pull Dad and I took the tractors to. The track wasn't anything spectacular but much better than what is in that video. They would use concrete blocks about 1,000# each starting at 1 and going up 1 at a time. You could pull your tractor until it wouldn't pull anymore. Usually, as long as you were able to start, you went the full length of the track. There always seemed to be a couple of tough spots that tried to stop you mid track though. They had tractors lined up at both ends pulling that old boat back and forth all day long. It was great hearing all colors work as they pulled down the track. Much better than the hole digging contest shown above IMHO. |

| I wouldn't even say that I saw anyone in that video who could even be considered a competent tractor operator, much less, a tractor puller. Anyone who has ever done fifteen minutes of field work knows that more throttle is the last thing to do when the tires begin to spin. We pull a lot of dead weight in Michigan, and I prefer it to transfer, but a good track is a must, I've seen those field pulls before, and they can work out, but someone needs to stop the spinning, and keep the area graded down. On a good track, a good tractor will pull 200 to 250% of it's own weight, and the trick is not just the pulling, but getting it to move in the first place, something transfer pullers never worry about. |
