I have a St. Johns enclosed cylinder that needs the bars flipped on but all of the bolts on the bars themselves are wore so bad that none of them will come out conventionally. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to proceed?

I’ll second Steve’s advice.

Also, are these cylinders still available?

Steves advice worked great only I have now found out that the bolts spin, obviously only a nut on the underside. I have no clue as to how they put these together, they must be put together as an entire assembly and then installed as a unit i'm guessing.

They closed the doors a few years ago.

I believe they are out of business, in fact I'm not too sure the gentlemen that owned it is dead.

That cylinder almost looks like those plates would come out for access except they are welded and bolted?  Are all of them welded?   Is there any access from the ends?

All of them are welded, and the ends are enclosed also.

If there's no way to gain access at the end it almost makes you wonder if they forgot to weld the nuts on the backside before they put the units in and welded them.

Try grinding off the welds from one of the panels, unbolt it, & remove it. Then you have access to service. Reverse process(reweld access panel) to complete service.

If that’s not in your feel good direction(balance cylinder?- consistent welds!!), here’s a web link with phone number that you might try?https://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=184672&DisplayType=flat&setCookie=1

I think so 7060, if everything is closed up he's going to have to grind welds of one plate to open, but before I closed it up and after new hardware, I would spot weld all the nuts on so you would only have to open up again unless there's a problem.  Make sure and lock tight those bolts and torque to spec.

You better also check the bolts holding the plates down first before you grind off any welds.  Make sure they don't have a loose nut on the back side.  If they do you will either have to come in from the end or torch bolts off plate and hope you can weld those nuts in the proper place too.  That's a hard call when you can't see behind to know what your dealing with, so might won't to try accessing from end if possible.

I don't think any phone number will help, last time I was through St John there building was occupied by someone else, if you could find someone that had one too, or the cell phone of the old owner, although I think he is dead but not sure.

Thats what I was thinking, whoever installed it forgot a step...

Be sure if you take the bolts and plate that hold your bars off, to mark exactly where that plate sat, in the event that it has slop, because a row of bars slightly not spaced exactly the same can cause real balance issues.  Don't ask me how I know that.LOL

Also there should be a bolts at both end around the diameter that have or can have washers, flat iron, etc to balance the cylinder, make sure those nuts are welded on the inside while your there.  The original open cylinder was balanced with weight behind bars but since you can't do that I'm assuming it's just like a enclosed rotor and the weight is out at the end of the cylinder.

One other cheap thing while you doing it, in front of your concave there should be 2 channel irons,(I think in front been a while since I was in a L) replace them I'm sure they are wore out if they were new with the bars.

Always fun working on things someone else thought welding was the EASY way to put together.

I second Kansas on the little bitty channel iron bars.

Was it installed as a complete unit? I don't know what the ends of the shaft are like but could it be removed and flipped side to side and reinstalled?
Just an idea.

Did they weld nuts on one rasp bar and if it is out you reach the other through that opening. That would be the lazy mans way but you never know.

those rasp bars look good yet in the pics, if you do replace them remember the new ones will grind the grain up if the settings where the old ones are used. also you will need to make sure the rotor is balanced or you'll tear out bearings. when you do replace them (the bars) put one on, then rotate the cyl to the opposite side and install that one, put a mark on the side (inside or outside) where you mounted a bar. don't just install around it as you go. you may hafta replace one side several times with different bars to keep the balance. you'll hafta spin the cyl. each time you mount 2 bars to see if it rocks back and forth or or settles away from your mark. if you get a bar to heavy, you may hafta grind a little off one end. do this with the filler plates too if you take more than one off. also remember to clean out the dust from the inside too.

I was thinking of the same thing.
I have decided to leave it alone for now and mess with it when we are not so close to harvest, I will tackle it some time later when I have more time.
