The price for used backhoes is subject to the market of any local area. I'm in Canada, the last 816 I sold was 9 years ago, it was in fair to good condition, I got $8000 for it then. Presently, that's likely holding if it were to be sold right now.

In the event that you don't already know, your 816 (#1065) was made in 1970 according to the serial# book. !970 was their most productive year as over 1400 were made. The years to follow only between 100 to 200 came out of the plant.

No, I don't have the number for the starter. Are you missing the starter altogether? You may come across listings for other applications where the 248 cubic inch Perkins was used. They may have different bell housings but the the 248 was used in Massey Ferguson tractors at the same time. If you go to a forum covering MF you may get some leads.

If you find a reputable shop that rebuilds starters, they'll have it fixed for you in short order. Most of the time not that much is wrong with a starter, it could even be that just the solenoid needs replacing.

I was having trouble with the 170 . Was cranking slow. I took the starter apart and just cleaned it. Replaced the solenoid and and discovered the voltage regulator wasn't working so replaced that as well. Made a world of difference.

It looks like all you need is a new starter drive, a rebuild shop can obtain and install exactly what you need.

Snap a post of the teeth on the flywheel ring gear and post it. If the teeth are worn badly on the ring gear, a new starter drive will not last long and the tractor will need taken apart to repair.

I'd bar the engine over while looking at the ring gear all 360 degree of engine rotation. I'll bet you have a tooth or two missing on the ring gear to wipe a starter drive like that.

On my HD4 I replaced the starter drive with a high buck one with machined case and snap ring holding the sprag unit - went bad a year later , was on a job and checked with a close by auto parts store - they had a unit but was the cheap one with stamped steel case - that one worked for 5 years and still was when i sold the machine .
On another unit I had the starter went bad I used the stock nose cone casting and mated it to a extra starter I had off my White truck gas engine armature , field , and drive , worked better and more power than the stock one

Perkins engines will crank and start very noisily with a tooth ripped from a ring gear for a long time. When two adjacent teeth are broken out they wipe the starter drive gear out on short order. Not suggesting this is the problem with yours, but it does need evaluated.

I've seen this more than once and have Perkins diesels myself; two being the 4.248 series in Hyster forklift applications, and a T4.236 from a Caterpillar backhoe tractor.
