Can a PTO be put on the back of this without a lot of work

Hi Dave,
Most I have seen had the shaft sticking out the back.  For it to work you need to have the rear pto clutch and shaft that goes forward and attaches to the engine.  There is a hub under the cover between your legs that the clutch attaches to.

If you have all of the parts, it should not be too hard.  Just remember that the PTO for these tractors spin at 2000 rpm - a far cry from the standard 540.
