Question for you melon growers, what causes this hard band in a watermelon? Almost looks like it quit growing, and then started again. Never seen this before. Store bought, we’ve quit feeding the deer |

It’s probably from a hot and dry spell, then it cooled off and got some water to keep growing…….

Joe, I will second Orange Glow's diagnosis, especially if the center is a lot sweeter than the rest. But those cute little deer like a treat also, especially dining in a neat well kept garden. Plant them some peas, they loved those.

Thats why I wont buy store melons!! LOL!! never tasted a decent one from there. Melons are sensitive about their growing conditions so ya that would be one of the effects of bad conditions!

When I drove semi and we was hauling watermelon the guys in the field in Florida would cut open a watermelon and cut the center out and eat it and through the rest away of course that was in the late 60s
