Anybody know the tooth count on a starter for an HD5 with a Detroit 2-71? I read somewhere that it should be 11 but mine has more than that. Not sure of the exact count but it’s not the original starter. This one has an electric solenoid for the bendix instead of manual operation. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

40MT 42MT 50MT 11T STARTER DRIVE FITS DETROIT DIESEL

Seems the teeth have to match the ring - and 11 tooth is the norm .
I have the 40 MT starter on my HD5G and have replaced the original unit on 3 other machines  with the same starter series as parts for old starters are hard to come by , and by using solonoid rather than the rod to switch on old starters it makes a simple upgrade .
Found a rebuilder here who gave me full credit for old starter so cost was around $100 for the update .

Thanks Coke. So you had to convert the starter over to 11 teeth?
