There is a post on another forum asking about a D/A (1400) cultivator. He says it's 22' and his main tractor is 110 HP. Several thought this would be a "load" for  the tractor. Just how deep is a f/c run ? I've never been around one so am curious. Thanks.

WOW, that's how deep we pull a chisel plow,7-8 inches. I thought perhaps a f/c was only 3-4 inches LOL!!  Like I said, have no experience with them.

I know one guy that pulls 34 foot with a 4020!---YA!---BUT you can stand in front of it and see the sun shining off the sweeps when they are in the ground!---a waste of time!--I always tried to go at least 4" with my 48 foot brady 6" is better but not really needed.
Ole 440 walked the dog with it. --- guy across the road always stared at me, course he ran green paint and never did like my orange stuff to be in the neighborhood! LOL!!

Field cultivators work best at 6-7 mph.  Run usually 3-6 inches deep depends on what you are trying to accomplish.  6-7 mph takes horsepower to run at those depths. Also depends what soils you have.  Sandy loam-pulls easy Clay loam-pulls hard

Are there any comparisons between a f/c and a true disc ? Seems like stones/rocks would tear the SH*T out of a f/c at 5+ mph Ouch

I guess we just run deep enough to take out tractor tracks, basically just trying to smooth out seed bed.

Guys who say they run a field cultivator or soil finisher 6 inches deep also think they chisel 16 to 18 inches deep with an old glencoe chisel. Malarkey! 3 inches is plenty deep. Get out and actually measure your depth guys

If you can get it in 6" deep front and back, you'll need something with tracks to pull it + at 6" deep it will plug with trash in a clean field.        MACK

Agree 3in is plenty...at least for a finish pass. if you're trying to level chiseled ground you might want it deeper but I just run it the same . the second pass runs a little deeper on its own. 3in of fluff is more than enough unless you have old Allis planter. Seems to me that a F/C and disc pull comparatively for same size. Of course it would all depend on depth wouldn't it?
Another thing to consider....5 inch sweeps pull easier than 9 inch so you could conceivably pull a 22ft F/C with narrow sweeps with 110hp if you didn't bury it.

If you try to pull a field cultivator either too fast or too deep they will begin to bounce then you either have to slow down or raise them up just a bit. The other thing would be if he is pulling it with say a 8010 front wheel assist he would probably do ok most of the time

I have pulled a 40' wil rich field cultivator with a case IH 8910 that's a 140 hp 2wd tractor it's just deep enough for the leveling finger mounted to the back to scratch the ground. So maybe 2 " deep. It's no problem if the grounds not wet. I can pull the same emplement behind a JD 8430 140 hp articulating tractor with a 60' harrow behind it usually 4" deep and not know its back there. If you go deeper than 3 to 4" with your field cultivator your wearing out the shank instead of the shovel. We go thru a lot of shovels every year.

Dad pulled a 21' IH with a 1066 in good Iowa dirt.  3-4" would be about as deep as you need.

Thanks guys, for some reason I was always under the impression that a f/c was designed to "tickle" the ground Smile.  Have a safe planting season guys Wink

2 to 3 inches for me just to smooth out the field and incorporate a fertilizer spread and or pre-emerge herbicide. But Allis did advertise the 1400 as a Chiselvator and as either a primary tillage tool or secondary. I think you'll eventually bend shanks or wear them out if you tried to use it as primary in my ground.

That was my thoughts, the shanks (in pictures that I've since looked up) don't look very heavily built at all Sleepy. Our old school BURCH row crop cultivator (hasn't been used in 20 years) has heavier shanks than some of the 'vator's I've seen.

3 inches is about right. Pulled a 18 foot Brady with a 7000 you wouldn’t want anymore. Pulled a 24 foot CIH with the 8030 it took some power. Size of the sweeps plays into it also. Spikes would pull pretty easy. Doubt a person would do much with a 22 foot on 110 hp. Rayl on Agtalk will tell you he pulls a 50 foot with his 4020.

We pull a 28 foot behind our tractor (green one) at 7 mph but all we are doing is leveling the field from ripping.  The bean stubble we just take out the stubble and level it.  Basically we have the top of the second bolt head exposed.

The 1400 is twice as heavy as a 1200, 1300, or 1350 cultivator. With a 110 hp tractor you could easily pull these but would need 50 hp more to pull a 1400 cultivator. I have one of each of these. 1400 is more of a primary cultivator tool, not so good for finish use. Just my opinion.
