Is it supposed to be glass? The dealer has always handed me the steel one.

They can be interchanged in most instances. The glass is rated at a lower pressure than the steel, so that must be taken into consideration if there is a pump before the filter. I've had both on my 7000 over the years, just depended on where I bought it. Also, some people seem to be cautious of using the glass filters on combines, thinking they are a higher risk of fire. A metal should be able to be used anywhere a glass was used, but a glass cannot necessarily be used where a metal one was.

Yes I've used both over the years. I trust the steel one more but my 7050 has no pump before the filter so not a big worry. My L2 has the spin-on but uses a glass water separator that is not really a so-called filter. Just wondering what was correct for my 7050. Doesn't really matter I just use the steel ones now and have a couple on the shelf at all times.

The glass fuel filter (not the glass water separator) was replaced by Allis-Chalmers 40+ years ago with the metal fuel filter. This was because on some (not all) engines the hand primer actually pressurized the filter and it could explode. I still have a scar on one of my fingers from one of those happenings. The glass water separator was always downstream from the hand primer, so that wasn't a problem. The glass water separator and the fuel filter do not and will not interchange as the filter bases are ported different.
