Were there any similarities between the A/C-D/A planters and the White (5100 series) as far as how the row units were run? Was talking to a friend of mine that had an estate sale 16 years ago and I remembered viewing the sale bill and saw the planter advertised but shied away because of the electric drives.
Comically, I did not know my friend at that time,so we've had several "laughs"pertaining to what a "small" world it is finding mutual people/interests we have. I will say, the planting tractor we ran back then was a D-15;pulling a JD 494A 4/30 PLATE planter. Thanks |

The only similarity is they use the same idea of positive air pressure on the seed disk. A great idea and is now common place today. Too bad Allis Chalmers and White don’t get the credit for this modern seed singulation design.

AC had the 77 series unit and later the 79/79 then the quad-dra-disc 385 positive air meter planter. Whites early units had electric motors like the AC - later they went to a hyd blower - a much better system . AC suffered from long term issues of dirty squirrel cage blowers, a break down of amps and other electrical issues. The AC unit needed 2 water column inches of pressure (.07 PSI) to properly hold the seed in the plate as did the White. Both were in a dispute over the seed disc patents - AC went with the center drop plate and White had the edge drop as a result. White quickly found they needed the ability to adjust the air pressure to keep accuracy from light seed to heavy while the AC plate had the seed plug the air hole and thus were not so sensitive to pressure as long as was @2WC or more. (we found grounding each motor to the frame increased the rpm as well as adding a main solenoid from a Gleaner in lieu of the monitor switch really helped as well as providing a hole in the screen to allow fins cleaning) There were many AC units running with White like systems - a great addition. The addition of the tickler brushes on the AC air units - the White brushes would bolt -screw in - allowed a tad more air to prevent skips and the brushed eliminated doubles. The later 385 was first orange and a common drive - Deutz would not fund the frame to allow 15" spacing as the prototype. Lou Swoverland was the project mgr. He saw so much potential and so much stupidity he nearly lost it. The 385 with the latest updates - cast seed hsg - rock / mud guards - was a great planter unit - equipped with the White air supply - if Deere had it it would have been on about every farm.. The two closing discs were about perfect achieving the same as all the aftermarket closing wheels available today . The purchase of White laid the possibility of putting the White meter housing on the 385. They chose to sell the 385 to Landoll - they did put the aluminum housing on. Anyway just a slow Sat morning rambling post.

When you say White like systems do you mean they adapted hydraulic drive to the AC or they made the AC electric drive mimic the White?

tbran, could you elaborate on the air planters "tickler brushes" as I,m not familiar with them. Where they used on the a/c 78/79 air units or just on the D/A 385 ? Thanks Dave

TBRAN, is any of the ALLIS planter unit technology used on any of the "now" planters of any brand ? I guess now that I typed this out, White(MASSEY) probably does? Thanks to all for the replies

I used a hydraulic motor to drive a Gleaner hillside blower for air on my 8 row 385 planter. Works good. MACK
