Pulled mine today . Have a new one on the way . One of the holes has bad threads . It's in the water jacket , of course . Had a bolt wrapped with Teflon tape in it . Anyone know of better fix ? I did order a stud to replace the bolt . Don't wanna pull the head if I can get by . Thanks

Try a small amount of hi-temp epoxy and use a release agent on the bolt.   Leon

Needs to be a stud so it runs out of threads when you screw it in 1/2" and put some kind of dope or Teflon tape on the threads. This is of course as long as someone hasn't oversized the hole in the head from drilling out a broken off stud from a previous repair ???...…….

You might have to drill it out and use an insert and some high temp sealer.

Any kind of epoxy or sealant that can withstand the whopping 15 ft-lbs of torque, should do the job... If the stud pops out, Heli-coil time...Wink

Checked my book and it says manifold to head torque is 25-30 lbs . Still less than I thought . I'll be happy with 5 lbs and no leak . Thanks

Missing 5 out of 8 studs . Have them on the way . Since the second stud from the front is in the water jacket I assume that the next to last stud is too ? Plan to put thread sealer on both . Should the other ones be installed dry ? Maybe a little antiseize ? Thanks

ACinSC,
I had two bad threads in the head on a 45. it was off so went to the shop and he put a new thread insert in each bad spot. This was 1/8 inch larger per side than the thread. I believe it screwed in with sealant and prick punch to lock it. It leaked just a little till the engine cured the sealant and hasnt leaked since. It was more work but saved the head.
I used sealer on all the studs when installed.
Good luck on your project.
Regards,
 Chris

Who are you getting them from?  I don't think I paid that much for ones from AGCO last time I got some.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

JB Weld sells a putty type glue for wet areas.  It comes in a cylindrical tube.  You cut off how much you need and then knead it.  it worked great on an oil pan I fixed so it should work for your use.  It should also make new threads once it's cured.

Everyone would like to know who's overcharging for parts. Or is it just AGCO has raised prices on parts they don't want to handle?

I would think even the expensive auto parts group, locally wouldn't charge much more than $5 per for those lil studs...Wink
