Hope this isn't to dumb but I need to replace the shifter boot. How do you remove the shifter knob?

If you can't get the knob off easily, you can always remove the whole shifter... slide the boot on from the bottom up.

Knob is threaded, tends to seize on there good may need a strap wrench or something to break it loose. A pipe wrench also works but will chew it up good, it is just hard plastic. They aren't that expensive if it's old might want to replace it also.

I will try the strap wrench. Now I just have to remember where I put the new boot!

A true WD-45 has a rubber knob that you just twist it and pull off. If you have a threaded on plastic knob, you either have an old WD or some customized gearshift lever.

The knob on a WD 45 is not threaded on. It is a hard rubber that is forced over the steel knob that is on the end of the shifting lever. Just have to fight it over the steel knob. Den

I have no doubt that it is a WD-45. I didn't think it was threaded but really didn't know. I guess we will fight with it. Thanks for all the replies.

I have a set of picks that have good stout handles, straight, curved and a 90 in the set. Have used the pick with the 90 to remove D-Series shifter knobs so I can replace the dust cover boot as the available boots just don't seem to last.
I break the rubber knob free so it rotates, then start working the 90 degree pick under it while working your way all around it while pulling up at the same time. Don't give up as it'll come and the 90 pick is also good for working the replacement boot on. Throwing the new boot in a pan of boiling water for a couple minutes helps soften it and a few drops of dish soap atop the shifter handle "ball" makes it easier to get them on.

Mike, I take a small hypodermic and squirt Dawn dish soap UP into the knob after getting it to turn freely. They can be a bear, but they just pull up and off.
