I have a 341 that the starter makes a screeching noise like an old chevy when the starter needs shimmed. has anyone encountered this? I have not taken the time to look into it yet, I am thinking I may need to do some custom shimming on it.
The long block is a NOS replacement and a new starter from Kohler. ring gear looked great when I did the swap.
I may have 20 hrs on this engine.
Thanks for any input, John.
I support the development of hybrid automobiles and alternative fuels as I need DIESEL fuel for my ALLIS CHALMERS!

are you sure the starter is making the noise or the the engine? does the engine run good when its started? does the starter squeal when its moterd on the bench ? yes you can shim the reason i ask is it sems like these old kohler k engines dont seam to last long when they are overhauled if everything onthe balance gears are not replaceed including the gears and they can make an intermitted squealling noise .  try shimming and let us know what happens
