My 66 combine gathering roll is rotted and missing pieces. What kind of wood is the gathering roll made of ?

You talking about the reel? I made mine from old wide planked house siding that I planed down and used tobacco sticks cut to the shape of the reel supports

Used pine on mine
190XT Series III, D17 Series IV, D15 Series II, All Crop 66 and a whole mess of equipment.

Assuming you are referencing the reel, I use red oak on all the wood pieces on my machines, especially on the 60A that has to sit out. Plus that's what they came with, according to my NOS parts.  My other 60A has plywood bats, but the PO did that. Personally I wouldn't have chose that, but since it stays inside it doesn't hurt.
