I have a 1955 wd45 with a dent in the gas tank and was wondering how I could get it out

I would wonder if a skilled person at a paintless dent repair shop could or would be willing to try their magic. I have seen them take out many a door ding and other imperfections and most times you cant find them back and the original paint is usually never harmed, just buffed out. Most automotive dealerships have a source for such services that they use on trade in vehicles.

Like a body shop does. Weld or solder a nut to the very clean dent area and slide hammer it out. May take several times until you get it where you can bondo it. Bondo cannot be very thick or it WILL fall back out in a couple of years.

Rough up the steel with corse emery paper so the bondo can adhere to the steel.

painless dent guy’s are working with car panels that get thinner every year. Those gas tanks are made out of real steel

You've got to get the dent smooth enough that you don't have a 1/4" of bondo in it. I don't care how rough you make the surface, if the bondo isn't pretty thin it DOES fall out over time, especially when the tank sits in the hot sun and then cools during the night time. Don't believe me. Ask a good body man if 1/4" thick of bondo in a golfball size dent is a smart idea.

Best way... Use an electric stud gun ( yeah, another Canadian invention...). it took 4 or 5 studs to get the ugly dent fixed on my D-14 tank. A few raps and taps later, guy had it smooooth enough ,it only needed 3-4 coats of 'high build' primer. This guy does it for a living,30-35 vehicles a year, His gallon can of 'Bondo' ( the filler) ,lasts over a year. He cuts bad steel out, welds in new, short strand fibreglas, a smidgin of bondo, thick primer, spot putty.

Am under the impression that body filler is now applied over a coat primer. Regardless, filler must be kept to a minimum. The stud gun method would be the most practical.

Your are correct Dr., thick bondo dose not work well, but I rough up the surface even with a thin coat.

Exactly! Good WD tanks aren't that hard to find. Having said that, I don't know that I would want to use any of the spares I currently have. A good tumbling would shine one up though.

My WD also has a big dent behind the fuel cap about 10” away. I watched the video and tool is pretty neat. I guess if the tank was drained and then filled with water to the top I may would try that. Not sure how that would react with fuel. Certainly don’t wanna blow myself up! But I’m not sure it could pull out the dent with the older, thicker metal that was used in the 50’s. I’ve never used one.

I have a cousin that does paintless dent repair. He fixed a grill for my CA and he said "I ain't working on no more damn tractors"  . Guess Joe's comment about new panels being thin is right on
