WIFE, found her Dream RV, CHEAP and Close, under 30' too.  So off to Doolittle MO Old Rte 66 RV Park.  BAD JUJU.  Wife was upbeat until saw it, Filthy from winter, landing leg kinda pigeon toe'd, doors open to air out and boy did it need it.  Announced ourselves and got full tour, NOT what she expected, NOT what she wanted and nowhere near to usable for us.   2013 Palomino Weekend type RV, not really a very good model or size or type or even price.  Rough Edged, Frame damage I could see at landing gear, tin foil and bubble gum as built, spitballs and tape to repair as they went.  Wife's comment as left, needed to wash hands, really felt need for full shower.

BAD BAD BAD!!

So went to Rolla had Steak and Shake then back home.  Nice jaunt, waste of gas.

I drove around far and wide a few years ago looking for a good used camper . Bad thing about Craigslist or market place is you can't smell them. Pictures only tell part of the story. My sense of smell is compromised at best. Every one I went to look at had some kind of funky smell. Got tired of looking so went and bought a new one. Best advice I got was to buy a dehumidifier and leave it plugged in during the summer months. If you let them sit in the humidity long enough they all start to smell like that.

If you put covers over the roof vents, you can leave the vents open year around. It keeps the rig ventilated and stops the stale "camper smell". It also enables you to go down the road with the vents open, which keeps in much cooler when you arrive at your destination. In very hot weather, I sometimes run the 12 volt exhaust fans (Fantastic or MaxxAir fans) while on the road.

It doesn't help that so many insist on dragging along an old cat or dog or pot-belly pig everywhere they go; they are immune to the filth and odor; they don't realize that they themselves smell like the lady that works at the dog groomers --- even after a shower and clean clothes.

I got sent on short notice to go take over a 379 Peterbilt that was stranded where the regular driver had had a heart attack and left the truck driverless.

I had to finish the round = deliver the load that was on it and then pick up and deliver the back haul.

When I got there, the first thing I saw when I opened the door were filthy feed and water bowls in the floor, complete with moldy Kibbles & Bits and blackish-green water teeming with tadpoles.

It smelled like a coon hunter's dog box.

I almost just left it there and hitch-hiked back home; if I hadn't have had high regard for the man that owned the truck, I would have done just that.....; plus, I needed the money.....; I badly needed the money.

There was a guy there where the truck had been left and I asked him what had went with the dogs --- I knew there had to have been more than one; he said that the next morning after the ambulance came and got the guy some skanky-looking old long-footed gal, tattoos all over her, rings in her lips and nose, with a cigarette hanging on her lip with about 3/4-inch of ashes hanging on it, rolled in there in an old car and loaded them up and left out with them; he said he knew he saw three and there may have been one or two that he didn't see.

The seats, mattress, carpet, and everything else was absolutely covered with fine short dog hair, about half-an-inch long.

For more than a week, I ate, breathed, and slept in all that dog hair.

It covered everything I ate.

It would cling around the threads of my bottle of Ski.

I sneezed and blew handfuls of it out of my nostrils.

I coughed it up.

For weeks later, I picked it out of my teeth.

That has been some time ago and I am sure there are still a couple handfuls in my lungs.

And the fleas......, it was unreal.....; I had heard of people getting fleas, but I had no idea ----- I do now; after about fifteen minutes in the cab, I could feel them crawling all over me....., and crawling around my scalp....., and crawling in every crack and crevice of my being....; millions of them....., tens of millions of them.....

When mission accomplished and I finally got back to home base, I showed the truck owner just what I had done for him; I told him to climb up in there and shut the door for a minute; he said "I ain't getting in there; I can see and smell enough out here; I don't know how you did it; I know I wouldn't have --- not for no amount of money; if I had of knowed he was doing my truck like that, I would have give him his walking papers."

In SLC we had a Driver nicknamed PigPen, had to service the cabover he ran and he had kindly set in the shop.  Reached in made sure was in Neutral then raised cab with jack,  As cleared about 25 degrees I heard the TINK TINK rattle Tink Thump SMASH of a glass bottle.  And there is was put out thru shifter boot hole, a bottle of PEE, smashed on shop floor, smelled as he had been in a pharmacy.  set cab back down so could back out and clean up glass.  Got in cab to back out, STINK hit as I got in seat, then all the paper wrappers of who knows what kind of fast food or junk food, some already been green awhile and saw the Bugs, moved truck to wash bay, got out and co worker grabbed RAID can sprayed the ones I brought out off seat., closed door.  Boss went to Hdwe Store, brought TWO Lock Spray Bug Bombs and we hit the truck with them left it sit 24 hours.  Raised Cab Full tilt and dragged mattress and seat parts could pull from truck, to a dumpster, next took pressure washer to the INSIDE of Cab, roaches, bed bugs, ants and other vermin all dead out in bags full.  Set off another set of bug bombs while they fired the driver, cleaned cab again, then gutted anything fabric.  Were additionally TWO started Pee Bottles in truck besides the FUL one that fell out.

Would rather work a Honey Bucket.

I grew up in the largest tire shop in five counties; we had the business, plenty of business.

In such a business, you soon learn just how filthy some people can be.

The worst are the entitled stuck-up fashion model type cougars whose daddys had plenty of money, and they married plenty, that spend hours primping before they come to town; their time would be better spent cleaning out their vehicle.

Mothers, especially young mothers, are bad as well, especially the soccer-mom types; they are terrified someone will abduct or molest one of their precious Mansons-in-training; when, they are in a lot more danger of catching botulism from their car seat.

It didn't take me long to learn to spot one pulling on the lot and make myself scarce, real scarce.

My father: "you're not doing anything; go out there and pull this ladies car in the shop for her" ... yeah - right - I ain't drawing hazard pay.

These later model vehicles always have a "key" to remove the lug nuts and the manufacturers seem to think it wise to hide such somewhere under a seat; that's always a good place to run into a bunch of wadded-up diapers.

It is funny; these over-indulged up with the Jones types' nearly-new vehicles will be worse than the back end of a garbage truck; whereas, some poor old girl who works a pay-nothing job, making about a hundred a week, and driving a thirty-year-old car, the inside of her car will be immaculate.

Wife was right back into the Dealer ads tonight after dinner.  She believes we can get a Good one just needs to see them before even consider hold money.  Moved up to Keystone and Grand Design as far as considerations, has upped her budget considerably.  Her expectation became a dream wish and not reality.

She had considered we try the Bike by itself with the little trailer, then thought about Swampass, severe heat and boredom KS and W KS then E CO and NB, checked on Hotels reservations and about choked where has a frequent user pass for several chains.  Where were once $85-150/night two occupants and the hotel would allow bike to park at entry under canopy they are now well above $180 -250 and pricey joints OVER $400/night.  Go to a no frills get what ya get motel and can find under $80 but then not so nice.

Back to truck, RV parks are not cheap either but extended stay for it where go out and ride  out a few days can be less for a week in a good chain hotel for a night, and less expense for many meals, essentially eat at home.

Dave, take a look at Buffs RV in Festus, they usually have a half dozen or so of good used 5th wheels, good honest people and they do good work for a really reasonable price.

This is what I would do and the trip/driving will be the best part instead of a dreaded nightmare.

Buy - rent - or borrow a 359 or 379 Peterbilt or a W900 Kenworth, one with one of those super-size sleepers, like 12-foot long or better.

Take off the fifth-wheel and mount a set of those ramps like house-trailer movers have to load and haul their escort vehicle.

Load your full-size pickup on the back.

Get yourself one of those Harbor Freight crane hoists and rig it up to pick up and load/unload your Japcycle.

Mount some escort lights on the pickup and Wide Load banners on both truck and pickup --- you can leave these off until you get to the truck-stop.

Anyone who sees the truck parked amongst the three hundred others will not think anything other than you have delivered a mobile home and are heading back home.

You don't even have to get your billfold out of your pocket and nobody is going to run you off or ask you to leave.

Start with a van/box trailer build your own camper trailer out of it.  But if you tow it on the 5th wheel and it looks to much like a regular trailer maybe that could be a issue.

Thought about that, legitimately.  Considered finding a old possum bottom 40' bedbug hauler.  usually had doors curbside on side that could be expanded to double for a slide out, sides are strong enough for RV style doors, major concern is height and axle position for maneuvering.  Age on a 40' would be ancient.

I have a 1972 F-350 Hi-Boy with 390 that looks like a new truck when I polish it up a bit.

Mine has a four-speed/5-position gear-driven transfer-case; I wish it was a NP205, but it is what it is; I have no idea just what case it is; it has a sort of pattern to the shifting; you don't just push it straight forward and back; Hi 4WD - Hi 2WD - N - Lo 2WD - Lo 4WD; it is not a chain-drive NP203.

I think 1978 was the last year for the Hi-Boy trucks.

They not only stood about a foot taller than anything else, they had a divorced transfer-case mid-ships; and, not only did they have a normal power-steering gear-box, but they also had a big double-acting hydraulic cylinder between the front axle tube and tie-rod; they drive like a Cadillac.

Whereas normal 4x4 with their transmission-mounted transfer-case and super-short steep-angle front drive-shaft would eat the foremost U-joint within weeks and go through Constant-Velocity couplings about one a year; the front drive-shaft on a Hi-Boy was long enough to avoid the steep angle and had no constant-velocity coupling; plus, no need for a rear shaft carrier-bearing.

Plus, they just look cool when you can see the two drive-shafts angling toward that midships transfer-case.

The reason they are on Fords is that all the Chevys are @ the Gay pride parade pulling floats.
