Just recently acquired an Allis Chalmers HD6E. I believe it's a '69. S/N 70C22259. The engine oil dipstick is not original. Can anyone tell me the dimensions on the dipstick to the operating range marks so I can make one? And how many gallons it should have?

crankcase capacity is 10 quarts + filters so could vary a bit depending on if you have HD bypass filters etc. I would guess any dozer application with deep pan 344 should be the same dipstick but would try to get measurements from a later direct inject engine to be sure. I have one in a grader but its not a deep pan so may be different.

I do not have the heavy duty filters on mine. Reading through the different manuals here: Crankcase plus filter is specified as 2.5, 3, or 4 gallons depending on which manual you read. Plus an additional 1 gallon for the heavy duty filters.
The manual that I believe would be closest to mine is "HD6 operations manual for serial #13222 and up" which specifies 4 gallons for crankcase and standard filters. But that manual also specifies 5 gallons for the transmission and I definitely just poured 15 into mine so I'm not sure if I should go with what it specifies for crankcase or not since it was so far off on the trans fluid.

Well I guess I'm concerned now... I'm very mechanically inclined but this whole heavy equipment thing is very new to me.
I checked the level (dipstick appears to be factory) with the engine at idle and transmission in neutral. Kept adding until it was at the top of the operating range which was definitely 15 gallons.
Are the brakes/steering clutches dry on some models and wet on others and would the fluid capacities be different? |

being a late model you probably have wet brakes and steering assist so you may be correct as they all use the same oil (from transmision sump) and would require more, but 15 gal sounds like a lot. my book doesnt cover everything and the 20 qts is likely trans and bevel gear.

I can confirm it's power assisted brakes and steering clutches. I drained a lot of fluid out of all three drain plugs under the transmission. I wanted to have a better understanding as to what was going on in there so as a test when I filled it back up I put the center plug in and left the two others out. Right about 5 gallons is when the two other holes started leaking. So I put the other two plugs in and filled her up... after another trip to get more oil. 
Any other opinions on crankcase oil capacity? or dimensions on the dipstick for my machine? |

yours is a late HD6E; totally different to earlier ones. crankcase capacity HD6E 20784 up is 4 gallons transmission steering clutch housing is 15 gallons; use ATF or a 10W transmission oil. There is filters on each side behind the battery boxes. Also a suction screen on lower lhs of gearbox. If you have sluggish steering that is first place to look.

Awesome, thank you!! I'll measure out 4 gallons and put me a mark on the aftermarket dipstick that came in it.
I did replace to two filters. How do I get to that screen?

Use 10w Hytrans Oil in trans/clutch refill, I use a commercial grade, ATF is only for extreme low ambient temps. Same system as on my 7G.
