can round baler splices be done successfully done in a bench vice? or any other tips on installing them with out the special vice?

I think you need a tool, I got a cheap one that fits in the vise, used it many times. Maybe not as good on newer heavy belts. Don't remember what I paid but was very reasonable.

ok thank you ive looked on line for a tool and splices and there are so many different combinations and splice sizes they making ordering one confusing

I've tried splicing flat belt once after my grandfathers lacing vice disappeared. It did'n turn out so well. The lacing vise holds the teeth in the correct position for straightness and spacing

Without the tool it is very hard to put the splice on straight. It's hard enough to put the pin in when they are straight.Find out what the baler manufacturer uses. 2 ply and 3 ply use different size splices.

Alligator clips, sure. Clipper lacing you MUST have the correct tool.
