Nothing coming down here the place I have been using is $3.76 for the 3rd week. But mile down main street it's $3.999 so $4.00. The other thing I noticed is the 89 and 92 test are more than 10 cent jumps like had been. Several place the 92 was 50 cents more than 87.

Gasoline Prices Adjusted for Inflation

Gas prices are often very volatile with sharp swings in what Americans pay at the pump. The average price for a gallon of gasoline jumped to $2.559 in February from $2.391 in January, marking an increase of 7%. Over the most recent 2020 calendar year, the average price of gas dropped to $2.242 from $2.698, marking a 16.9% decline from 2019.

Pricing for gasoline is a major category used by U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in calculating inflation but their volatility is also why they are excluded when the agency calculates core inflation rates.

The chart above and table below shows average annual prices of gasoline and those prices based on inflation in 2020 dollars. Specifically, they offer insights into how prices at the pump have changed over the years and how those prices compare after they have been adjusted for inflation.

How to Adjust Gasoline Prices for Inflation

In calculating gasoline prices to adjust for inflation, we’ll use an example that shows how to adjust them from 1978 to 2020. First, consider these facts which are shown in the table above:

  • The average price for gasoline in 1978 was $0.652 per gallon.
  • The annual average CPI for Gasoline (all types) in 1978 was 51.900.
  • The annual average CPI for Gasoline (all types) in 2020 was 194.130.

The following formula shows how to adjust gasoline for inflation:

1978 Gas Price x (2020 CPI for Gas / 1978 CPI for Gas) = Adjusted Gas Price in 2020 Dollars

Using the actual numbers:

$0.652 x (194.130/51.900) = $2.44

What i see from your INFLATION price is that the price DROPPED YEARLY during the last administration... In the past 8 weeks THAT HAS CHANGED... Now it is GOING UP at a RAPID RATE............ just the FACTS.

and the new GAS TAXES coming this summer will only add to the RATE.

What I see from the above chart is that the people who compiled it aren't very good at math!

Good point, that supports my lack of math skills post nicely.

If they are that far off on those lines and 2007,(and others) I would doubt the credibility of the whole thing.

Steve your chart guys left out the real good time back before 78 when gas was real cheap. But since free was not around I guess it would not count anyway. I can well remember the 30 cent a gallon days. And when they all needed new pumps to charge more than 99 cent.

WinkBut that like when my dad would tell me back in 36 we only payed 2 cents a gallon for diesel. Yes my grandpa was ahead of the game and bought the second diesel Caterpillar 35 tractor to find its way to the dealer here.

Most of us are old enough to remember back in the 1960's when gas was around .25 a gallon and then there would be a gas war and it dropped to .19 cents, we would fill up everything we owned cause gas was so cheap!

Been there done that in my Well Used first car, a 1954 Olds Super 88 with the 324 Rocket V8 and Carter AFB Four Barrel.  .19/9 gas at the farmers co-op station would last me a week at five dollar fill ups.

I worked at a 24 hour truck stop in high school.  Gas was 24.9 and I got a penny discount as an employee. I worked 16-18 hours from Friday night to Sunday night. That was the life for a young guy.
