Folks,
 My friend Matt pulled this tractor from a fence row a couple months ago. Its rough, but functions. He belted it up and buzzed some wood with it yesterday. Today was a conversion to 12 volt alternator and coil, and battery. Also he worked on the 3 point hitch system. He got the arms with the pivots from another of his tractors (English Massey).
Some pictures:
Serial number- D14 5868

Matt installed the tool box that was on one of My Uncles tractors:

Both rear fenders are rough with crinkles and the left one was welded where it had rusted out at the bottom. Seat is in pretty bad shape but like the fenders still hanging in there!


Where are the brakes on these? Inside the trumpets? Still has some brake left.
 
This rim is not good but has had some repairs around the valve stem. Power director has good snap. No guard on the PD lever indicating a early model too

Will WD rims fit on a D14?

Yes,  The WD Wheels will fit on the D14.  Any 8 bolt rim should fit.

Re the brakes, they are inside the axle housing, real close to the diff.  You have to pull the FD housing, then the axle housing, to get to the brake drums and shoes...HTHWink

 I am working on him to do some horse trading! Maybe bring it to my house and leave it for a while. I mean he does have my TD6 dozer at his place!:) Seems only fair and he is a IH guy!
I am going to have a real nice set of Firestone 13.6-28's from the WZ, that would bolt right on this D14!

Yes, brakes are 'inside'..if you want practice...hint,hint....
There's an axle seal that goes,allows diff oil to 'lubricate' the shoes. Also the ram cylinder seals can go or the hyd hose inside the diff. The telltale is having to add hyd oil.... If you open it up for that, have a hyd shop make the hose WITH 1 swivel fitting, it'll make reassembly go easier as the AGCO part(still on my shelf) doesn't swivel...

No, they are far easier to change. You need a hoist to hold the axle housing, with or without the tire attached, when you slide the axle housing out of the trans/differential housing. 4 bolts hold the axle to the transmission. No rusted brake pins to mess with. The brake drum will stay with the axle in the axle housing. The 2 brake shoes will be attached to a plate that stays on the trans housing similar to the drum brakes on 80's/90's trucks. Once you have the axle off it will be practically self explanatory. Be sure to change the axle shaft seal when you have the axle out.

Late model D14s do not have the guard on the hand clutch button either.  Nice straight tractor there.  She should clean up nicely.

Folks,
 Matt needed some chains and some help today with his D14. I supplied him with some very worn tire chains that had been used for many years on WD's.
When we started looking the spin out rims were not out away from the fenders far enough so we spent a hour or more getting the three eccentrics per wheel loosened and he made some plates for wheel stops. 

Stop for wheels, add ed both sides on the rail. plate with bolts through them. Looked like this farmer fix was going to work ok.

Installed the chains then cut some off each to fit the tire.

Some bungees and it was ready to plow snow. He said it worked much better with the chains!

Is that the type of chains that will tear chunks of the cleats off of the tires?  Or does that only happen if they are loose?

John, Guys,
Yea this is rough around all the edges, smokes some on start up. But it still moves and functions.
I have run these old chains some and they didnt seem to bother the tires. They are so worn and smooth or maybe sharp in some areas. He was happy to get them, We spent some quality time getting those rims moved and the chains on. All in all a good couple hours.  I beat on the heads of the eccentrics with a 10 lb sledge several dozen times which may have helped too? I was very surprised that we got the eccentrics to turn. It cost a cheap socket and a 1/2 inch ratchet before they all moved. I told Matt he was pretty lucky as these typically have to be removed from the tractor. He should buy Loto tickets!

On those eccentrics; I have a (I think) 20mm 1/2" drive socket welded to a 3/4" adapter. Works good on those extra tough ones!

My CA has 1/2" square eccentrics. I welded two 1" six point 1/2" drive sockets together with the square 1/2" drive openings facing out...one end for a breaker bar, the other for the eccentric.

If memory serves , I think it was 21mm and 25/32 I was looking for . Was hoping to buy one locally and if it didn't fit return it . Of course I can get them online . No big deal , I just wanted to remove them for some paint . Thanks

Rails do not look like the eccentrics were run loose as the rails will show "flattening" of the metal. Have removed eccentrics that were worn paper thin and one old D15 I picked up had rails worn beyond use on both rims as ran far too long allowed to move.
A clunking sound is usually a dead giveaway on worn eccentric inserts but finals low on fluid will cause the same clunking sound.

Folks,
 Matt came over today with the D14 to borrow my buzz rig to cut slabs. Well it did not go as planned!




When we had the top link in place the buzz rig tipped way back. 

We had to use a short chain to get the buzz rig high enough that he could load it. 

Luckily he has another 20 tractors to choose from so he mounted it on a 9N and it worked fine. PTO was too short too?  Not sure what is going on with the geometry of the new 3 point we put on the D14??
