Ok fellas, roughly halfway thru the pulling season here in southern PA. I've had some good runs with my 185, moving to 18.4 38's on pressed steel very soon plus having pump and injector work done in anticipation for next year. Still raking the coals trying to figure something out for a good cubic inch game, I've searched and talked to a lot of people over the past few months. Very little is known. Looking to get around 400ci or as close to it as I can. I have heard of 1 405ci non turbo diesel 301 build, I'd love to find details on that. Also I have to stay non turbo per class rules.

Yes. 405 NA or 405 with 3 inch inlet turbo/intercooler has been done before.

Custom built pistons and sleeves and the block is bored. Gets expensive.

Are you able to get to our pull at Crownsville Md on Friday September 13th. We always need more ORANGE and our rules are very permissive for Open classes. We have a 3500,4500,5500,6500 & 7500 you should fit into.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

There seem to be a lot of rookie pullers that want to do a whole bunch of things to improve/gain HP, gearing, tires, wheels etc and then they find out what it will COST and all of a sudden you never hear from them again.  $500 pretty much buys nothing when it comes to "go-faster" parts. $5000 will get you somewhere.

I'm prepared to spend the $, I just need to know what route to take. I know it's been done but up to this point details are few and far between.

Some one much smarter then me might answer that better but I don’t see Spend 8k for 100hp gain on a N/A motor. Think going as much as you can with out getting into the block would be most gains for dollar and be more off concentrating on flow then CI
