how does one tell a distillate from gasoline engine? compression test? carb?

Not certain about this but I thought all distillate units had a small gasoline tank to start on then switch over when warmed. Should be under hood on rt side I think. Don't think you can start on distillate alone.:

I would think the "starter fuel" tank and the "K" after the engine serial number would be the only way

from the owners manual-

I think also a K manifold unless it’s been changed. Isn’t needed unless you plan to use distillate.
