I am replacing a few blades.. 3 short spools were broke. And a bearing was gone.
Boy are discs expensive with blades being $54 for a 22 inch.

Just a question on the bearings, They sell offshore bearings for $26 or better ones for $56.. are the more expensive ones worth it?

Also, any tips on getting them tightened? I currently use a pipe wrench to grab onto a spool then use a big ratchet or cheater bar to tighten the nut.

Just fixing what needs it right now but would like to do a full rebuild at some point, pretty good disc but it's 25 foot and a bit much for the old 7040

A 2500 shaft isn't real big, but typically when tightening a disc nut down, I'll use an 8' bar on either end. That may be a bit much for a 2500, so a 6' bar may be a better bet. Even a 1" impact is barely enough, and I wouldn't do that personally. I feel that a lot of the impacting is lost through the long shaft. A 1" impact has a ton a hit, but it's not all tightening the nut.

I've wondered about the bearings myself. We use as cheap as I can find, bought from eBay last time.

According to the 2500 manual, they need to be tightened to 750 ftlbs. Take 750/your_weight, gives you the cheater length.

thanks for the replies. I wire brush everything/ grind any rust between blades/spacers etc. I replaced a blade earlier in the season and it stayed tight, thanks for letting me know how much torque they are supposed to have.

Any time we tighten a disc gang of any kind we use a slug wrench. Always have been able get 1/2 to a full turn on what I can get with my 225-240 butt on a 4 foot cheater. I think Shoup has a special washer that helps maintain tension.   My Sunflower came used with it. Saying you put a 1" impact on it doesn't mean much.

I use the gang wrenches from Allis. They work very will as they are made just for the job. They are about 5' long and fit perfectly on both ends of the gang shaft.
Thanks & God Bless

Ask that question on Agtalk in the past the replies for notched aren't very favorable.

Notched won't run as many acres before they are worn out and are easier to break in rocks.

if you put new blades on, move the ones from the back to the front, then put the new ones on the back.
