My friend is trying to resurrect his grandpa's d17 series 4.  Wide front, gas.  It runs and moves, but we're having trouble with the hydraulics.  When he starts it up, the lift arms come all the way up, even though the lever is in the down position.  Only way to get them down seems to be bleeding the feed lines.  He's gonna borrow my 2 row AC planter to plant his sweet corn very soon, but needs the lift arms to work first.  
Any ideas what we're facing here?

When you are doing your search, the same thing happens with the 180 and 185 (and probably several other models). it's pretty common after the tractor sets for a while.

Standing behind the tractor, there is an aluminum cap attached with two allen-head screws on the rear of hydraulic valve section close to the right fender. Underneath this cap is a "tee" handle. Remove the aluminum cap and spring that is inside. Place BOTH of the rear hydraulic levers clear forward. Tap on the end of the now exposed spool with a hammer and a punch that has a 1/2" end. The spool needs to be driven clear forward until the snap ring stops it. Problem should be fixed until someone pulls on either rear hydraulic lever. Rusted up and stuck external linkage is the usual culprit. You CANNOT run the tractor with the hydraulics squealing all the time !!  Get that spool moved forward.
