It has less than 50 hours on a complete overhaul. It had a d17 overhaul kit put in it.

Well that may be but it will still have to come apart to address the counter bores. What was done to the block when the d17 kit was put in it?Doesn't sound like the counter bores were done properly otherwise your sleeves would have stand out above the deck.

I can sell you a set of fire rings that will seal it up if you have some one qualified to put them in and properly torque it down. MACK

Brand new sleeves (with a crisp sharp lip on them) probably did stand up a good enough amount when installed in a worn out block counterbore. But, as soon as things were torqued down and the engine run for a time, the sleeves have now settled down into the worn counterbore ledges. Now, you have head gasket blowing problems.

pull it down and have the block decked and all bores cut to get +.004 on all sleeves or you are wasting your time

Is there a way to “shim” the sleeves up?

A shim on an old, worn and non-square counterbore is a waste of time.

I'll throw my 2 cents in here. At the plant the height of the cylinder sleeve in relation to the block was referred to as cylinder sleeve protrusion. The Doc is correct on the .003 / .005 spec above the deck surface. Simply measure from the very top of the sleeve down to the deck surface. the best tool to use is a depth micrometer.
Another thought on how to achieve this dimension other than thicker fire rings (most effective) or redecking the block is what we used on the V12 engines when we started production of that engine and that was the use of shims. When measuring the protrusion take you readings from at lest 4 or more spots around the sleeve.

I got some old sleeves in the shop I should go "measure the width of step on liner. IT AIN'T MUCH!!!! As Doc says, they are so skimpy shimming would be a joke. Sorry Jack but that won't work on these.

Hooked up a Allis Chalmers 3-16 plow today and plowed half the day. Only problem I had was it barely started in the morning after a hour of being plugged in and a little starting fluid. Can’t figure out why it won’t start very good when it’s 40 degrees out.

After all the head gasket troubles and knowing that you have a couple of sleeves not sitting up where they should be and you plow with it ???

Yep, it pulls really good in 2nt gear (it runs quite fast for a 45) which I think is between 5 and 8 mph. In 4th it goes between 18 and 22 mph.

I think I figure out what was wrong, one pair of valve was out of adjustment. I took it apart and torque the head to 105 ft lb and adjusted/ checked all the valves. I did get it back together and started it which was a lot better. I’ll see if it will start tomorrow afternoon and see if it fixed the problem.

LOL! This guy has got everybody scratchin' their heads...... LOL! How did Foghorn Leghorn say it? "Nice boy, but don't listen to a word ya say"...... I've had my share of customers over the years in the electrical field do the same thing. It'll eventually come back to haunt him again. Usually things like that become "hand granades" later on when not done correctly the first time. Sorry to say but that's what happens.... Steve@B&B

Well now I’m back again with another problem...
And not with the engine but the clutch... Well as the story goes I was sickle mowing with it cause I like the speed of it and just got back from a 2 mile drive and was getting ready to go for a 5 mile drive to another farm and well I replaced a guard on the mower in the shop and went to drive it out, well it made a “thunk”,rolled out and stopped... |

If the PTO and hydraulic pump won't work, the foot clutch has failed.

I think well it is apart, I will rebuild/replace the hand clutch since I know that it doesn’t have any shims left.
Does anyone know of a place that would sell just the pads for a fair price? Other wise I might have access to a parts Wd that’s all ready apart. |
