Putting the top link pin in a 76 ac 5040... the thing looks like it opens up some where the pin can be installed but I cannot figure out how to work it I go to install my pin and it hits on either side and I cannot put my lynchpin in

Is the label on the pin preventing it from going in?

In the picture the two sides look like they may be bent out.  If that is the case your pin won't go thru because the holes are not aligned.  If that is the case you may have to go with a smaller pin.

on my 5040 the pin is ground to a slant on one side at the end you would hold to push it thru the holes on the tractor

No the lip on the end of the pin hit and catches and wont let it slide in I was thinking the way it looks is like the whole thing is a spring

I can get a shorter pin to go through it but it don't quite go through far enough for me to put a linchpin in to lock it into place

Grind a flat spot on the head end to create clearance. Make it parallel to your lynch pin hole.

I didn't mean shorter, I meant smaller diameter.

Try a well worn TL pin.  Either the bracket is sprung, the eye on the TL is too fat, or the new pin is too thick.  Or some combination of the 3...Wink

Thinking about it the Fiats come with a special top link pin,might be a metric size.
