I am doing some preliminary hunting before i tear into it. I need to have my starter rebuilt, turns slow and the drive is shot. Also, the ring gear needs replaced. to my surprise,it is NOT the same as D17 tractor. i assumed it would be since it uses D17 engine. Parts book shows part #3004806 with 120 teeth. this is larger than wc/wd ring gear 100 teeth and smaller than D17 139 teeth. a google search of the part # shows nothing?
is this some goofy ring gear that will be impossible to find? is it the same as any gleaner? naturally AGCO parts books does not indicate # of teeth on gleaner ring gears.

Usually there are enough good teeth on an old ring gear to see exactly how the angles are cut on the teeth....with a lot of patience, welder and grinder you can build up and repair the teeth....that is if you can't find a good used ring gear. My Dad has done this to many ring gears especially on Allis tractors. The level of accuracy will determine the success and longevity of this type of repair. On bigger type of engines we have done this through the hole where the starter mounts but then you are limited to die grinders for shaping the teeth. A work bench repair is by far easier.

Take the ring gear off, rotate is, relative to its former position, about 10-15 teeth to the right or left. Most engines have 4 spots where the engine stops rotating, when you shut it down. This results in 4 spots, where the teeth get worn down. If it is worn too bad, you can always turn to the other side of the ring gear, and grind a relief cut, same as the front...

My TL12 is circa 1965 and the ring gear # is 226830 and the flywheel # is 233623. I think earlier models could be different. HTH--Dan

my serial # is unreadable but I have several stampings from 10/58 so its probably a 58 or early 59.
yes it could be turned around or welded but I would rather replace it if I can. we shall see what the rest of it looks like when I pull it apart.
