I know I've been lax in posting pics from my trip to Texas back in May to get my wife's grandfather's tractor and implements, so here we go!

My beautiful truck fueling up in Dumas, TX (IIRC). Rental 18' flatbed with 2' dove, tandem 6k axles.

Next day on the way to the property:

At the property:

I spent a couple hours futzing with the tractor to see if it would fire up, but no such luck. Wife is in the truck, I was guiding the tractor, and we got it perfectly located first try.

The row where the implements have been resting for god knows how long:

I used the truck to pull the implements around front so we could load them on the trailer, so some of this is engine heat, but it was toasty in the Texas sun!

We were working hard loading implements so didn't take many pics, but here's the disc harrow before I took it apart (too heavy/bulky to load intact):

Back at the inlaws' where we were staying; looks like the damn Clampetts have come to town! Keep in mind that my 5'3" wife and I loaded this whole thing by ourselves by hand!

This jerk in an Allis Chalmers tractor tailgated me all the way back to Colorado:

Fully loaded, after fueling in Springfield, Colorado, around 2:30pm, about 75 degrees out. Earlier in Dumas TX, we grossed 17,840 lbs, and my poor stock 12 valve was not very happy, especially going into the headwind that we had all the way home.

I mention the above temperature because we came into this about twenty miles from home:

Easily 25 degrees before wind chill, ice caked on the roads, the whole nine yards. My dirt road was so muddy and slushy that I had to unhitch and leave the trailer in town for a day before I could get it home.

Ended up unloading the trailer in the snow and frigid winds, by hand, because I had to get the trailer back to the rental place. Definitely an adventure though, had a great time with the wife and pups, ate some great BBQ in Amarillo down and back, got to visit with the family, and just had a good time getting this old orange home.

That's pretty cool you got it all in one load. That must also have been a shock to the system going from 100+ down to 25...

I remember when you started asking questions about doing this and how it could happen. You almost talked yourself out of it cause it just "wasn't possible".Folks on here gave you ideas and encouragement and before too long you showed a spark of hope. One thing led to another and next thing we knew you had a "plan".Looks like it worked!!! Congratulations for finishing well!

congrats on the successful trip, and saving the tractor! Is the pickup a 5 speed or an auto?

a buddy has a multi-colored tractor he lovingly refers to as "The Rainbow Coalition" :)

different paint is better than no paint, like a few of mine. :) paint is allmost all off the hood now... :O

+1

I ended up settling on a Dodge Dakota for the time being, but a nice 12V with a 5-speed is probably going to confront me a few years from now.

Glad it all worked out.  As mentioned, it will be a journey you and your wife will remember for years, hopefully with a smile.  Hope you get it running and in the field this summer.

congratulations!   I too remember this from the start, and am glad it all worked out for you.  now the real fun starts!  keep us updated on getting the WD going!  Did you end up getting all the stuff that went along with it, or just some of it?  looks like all of it, and like others said, I would have lost the bet that it would have all fit on the trailer, LOL!

Thanks all for the positive words! I'm very fortunate to have an amazing wife who's great company on a road trip. We had our bags piled up in the extra cab of the truck and piled blankets on them to create Dogtopia, where the pups crashed out the whole time; they're excellent road trip dogs, too. So we had fun in all of this. :)  Even after a long hot day loading the trailer about 9:30 pm, we were both frustrated, snappy, dehydrated, etc., and we got Whataburger in Graham TX and still had a good time. Couldn't ask for better.

The only two implements we had to leave behind were a trip bucket and a weird single-bottom plow kind of thing (not really sure what it was). Not a big deal, and we can always get them at a later date. I'm thinking small trailer behind my 47mpg diesel Jetta. :)

The Dodge is an auto, and it's stock which is why I haven't turned up the power on the mighty mighty 12 valve yet. It definitely wasn't feeling very mighty with 11,000 lbs behind it into a headwind, so I need to build the tranny and get some gauges and then start playing with the power mods.

This was another great post that I missed when I was up at the farm all summer.
GREAT job on getting it all home.  I too remember when you started this adventure.  I'm impressed!
How many 'Bears' stopped you on the trip?  I think most cops would have just gone on by and just shook their heads and though; "I've got better things to do, like lunch.."
I'll bet you and your better half were REAL HAPPY to get home!  Great memories!
Great Pics too.

I see you even got the optional "roll cage" with your tractor! Never noticed it the first time I looked at your trip last year -  LOL!  Guess I was too impressed with how you were able to engineer that great packing job on the trailer with only your great little wife to help you.

Thanks all. :)  Tractor has been a handful to get running and still isn't, and all the implements have been sitting in a row getting mowed around all last summer. It was definitely an adventure, though, and good times for sure. No police interaction at all! I was a little surprised at times, and I'm sure we got some funny looks, but nobody bugged me at all.

Something I discovered back in the fall - the boost reference line to the AFC on my injection pump on the Dodge was broken and split apart. That line allows boost to act on the diaphragm in the AFC and adjust fueling accordingly. A lot of the high-horsepower 12-valve guys put a solenoid in that line so they can turn the power of the truck down (for the wife or valet or whatever), and it can cut the power that the truck makes down by close to half. With my line all busted up, I basically hauled that heavy load around 700 miles with the valet switch on. D'oh!!
