I have a dilema. My local PPG auto paint store no longer has a mixing formula for PPG 60080. They say they will mix a gallon of 60080 if I can furnish a detailed mixing formula.

Need the actual formula real bad. The sticker on my can of OMNI AE they mixed quite a while back is unreadable.

Near as I can tell from what I can make out, the tints that make up the color are M130 M114 M115 M120 M102 M103. There may be another. I need the amounts

they should be able to make up a match with the paint on the bottom side of the lid or spray out a preped piece of metal any auto paint store should be able to make you a duplicate of the color

Ken tell them to call another dealer and grt codes, if this helps ,my PPG dealer is action auto parts, Willmar Mn. 320-235-2468, i looked on my cans and there arent any codes, other than MTK 60080.

I had trouble finding it this fall, as none of the local PPG dealers carried the components to mix 60080 in anything less than a basecoat/clearcoat combination. I ended up using Dupont Nason Acrylic Enamel in Spectramaster Yellow #YS074. Although the coverage was less than ideal, the color and shine are great. This was on an AC SC/3pt. adapter that I resurrected.

I would think all they have to do is pick up the phone and call PPG. PPG from what I understand from my bodyman that paints my stuff, has everything on computer which includes blending and color matching exsisting paints for collision work. Sounds like somebody there doesn't want to be bothered to do that for ya Ken. That stinks!

Weekends are a bad time to go PPG paint shopping. 8 to 5 on weekday workdays is a better plan if you have time off during the week.

Some of those guys at the paint store or parts store have there head so far up there butt they don't know if there coming or going. I can not say enough about a good parts guy. I tried to buy gasket paper last week. I did research online find which store carry the brand paper I wanted and went there so they could order it. The kid behind the counter gave me a blank look. I called the vender put him on the phone with her. She explained to him they sold their product and he could sell it. So I got my gasket paper. I have no idea how some of them keep their doors open.

Latest update on matching PPG OMNI AE to paint code 60080. I talked to the expert in my family and #4 Son Chad suggested pealing the paper label off the can and see if when PPG mixed 60080 they stuck a formula mixing sticker to the can under the label. He told me any good PPG or Dupont paint supplyer does this hidden sticker to protect a formula from getting paint or other junk on it making it unreadable. Sure enough there was a pristeen formula sticker stuck to the can under the paper label.

Oddly enough the good folks at the same PPG paint store that mixed the paint in 2005 did not know to look under the label to find the protected sticker with a readable formula.

If it wasn't so pathetic it would be funny. The PPG guy was stuck on himself and was sure he could scan a dry sample of 60080 and get a perfect match. After 3 tries and having no room left for adding more color he gave up ruining a gallon of OMNI AE in the process.

We will try again on Monday with the PPG 60080 mixing formula found under the OMNI label and hope to finally get it right

Ken - when I had some PPG Omni AE mixed up in 2006 in 60396 for PO #2, they told me the tractor codes were older formulas without near as much color components as newer formulas. The store I went to in St. Louis doubled all the color components (same ratios) in the formula so I'd have better coverage. It worked great for me and the color was perfect. Sounds like at your store, though, that suggestion might get you another dumb look back. Mike

The paint shop I deal with on a regular bases would have been able to make a match from a small sample of paint .I had a gallon of paint from the late 50s given to me that was stored in a cool place ,on the label it said allis chalmers dupont.I took it to the paint stopre that I have done business with for yrs going way back to when I painted cars,and the young man took 2 trys at it and came up with the best persion oranger ! mix I have ever seen .I brought the sample home and took it to the inside of the old 60 combine and it was a dead on match ,then I went to the ca and pulled the shifter knob off it was perfect.So now when I call him up I just ask for him to mix me up some of my paint and he has it right under my name. So a good paint dealer with good workers will match paint up if they are any good ,But I ran into that with a monroe shoch dealer looking for a shock for a monroe seat.He told me me I don t know there might be something out on the shelf but he didn t know ,then he sat back down on his big fat butt and started looking at the paper.After blowing my stack loud enough that the arbys next door could hear me I went to NAPA he orderd me one ane I had it the next morning .People behind the counter make a big difference

The Idea of adding more of each tint as Skybaloon suggests, to get better coverage, is interesting. If the base is totally clear this may work just fine. In reading the formula we found, ( I don't have it in front of me ) 60080 is Orange, two different Yellows , white, something else and Dryer mixed. If the base is absolutly clear to start with the balance of pigments is what produces the actual color. I am not that familiar with OMNI bases but do know there are several. In house paint deep tones require special bases. Especially reds

I'm a retired painter and custom mixed to match hundreds of gallons of interior and exterior house paints by adding pigments to white paint. Doubling the amount of color just made a darker shade because more white pigment was not available to create a balance. Coverage is directly related to the amount of pigments

Ken - That's what the PPG dealer told me when they mixed it up and he may have used "doubling" as an expression of what he was doing. It very well may not have been an exact description of what he did to each color component. I don't remember what color the base was either. I do have the original cans at the farm and will look this weekend when I go to see if the label can tell me anything. Mike

Anyone planning to use PPG 60080 needs to know this. Getting a mixing formula can be a real problem. After much frustration with PPG and on the only good advice I got from my restoration shop manager son, here is what I came up with.

Formula for Mixing MAE 60080 A PERSIAN ORANGE- Qty:1 Gallon

Code Color Parts

M130 Orange 513.3

M114 Yellow 418.4

M115 Yellow 377.6

M120 White 54.4

M117 Black 42.0

M102 Drier 80.8

M103 Clear 3006.8

Remarks: VOC:.4.4/% Lead 5: SDS: MAE 2

The good info I got from My Son was : Carefully cut the paper wrapper off any old can of any PPG mixed color and a hidden label with a readable formula of the mix will be stuck directly to the can. I had a old Gal bucket of PPG 60080 mixed on 4/23/2005 and it had this hidden label just like he said. A real PPG paint store routinely does this hidden sticker stuck directly to the can under the outside paper wrapper as extra insurance that the mixing formula can be duplicated anytime in the future. Nice to know this.

Without this information the PPG paint store wanted to scan and match a dry sample of 60080 and came up with a Orange that was as transparent as KOOL AID. Not enough pigment to cover itself. The weekend help had my old can and did not know to look under the wrapper for the hidden formula sticker.

Monday we got the PO#1 mixed right and most of Gary's 38 B is finish painted.

Gary got the mismatched Gallon for $20. Plan is to shoot the above formula for 60080 in whats there to get some coverage and paint a C. I bet the color will be close enough to please the paint cops

I checked my paint cans this weekend for PPG Omni in PO #2 and here's the formula for that (code 60396)

MAE 60396A
Orange #2
Qty 268 Ounces (I bought 2 gallons (256 oz) + 4 spray cans @ approx 3 oz each)

M130 Orange   1844.2
M113 Yellow      207.7
M117 Black         22.6
M119 White          4.2
M102 Drier        169.2
M103 Clear       7254.4

VOC = 4.3

Multiply each number by 128/268 (.477611940) to get the qty for each gallon. Now what I don't know is if this is the doubled formula the PPG dealer told me that he mixed for me or not.   This formula may have just been printed out from the computer for the labels and he doubled the color tint qty's when he mixed it. That's the impression I got when I was there watching him. Mike

Maybe someone who has an older can of PO2 could check Mike's formula to see what the hidden formula says.......good info - I have saved both formulae.
