On my 7G, the spec is for Type A ATF, I have been using Dexron but I am not feeling warm and fuzzy over it.  A question, my other Allis, a 180 with a Power director uses Permatran 821, would this be a comarative oil stock to use in this machine?  I know it is a hydraulic rather than a ATF oil but will it affect the brakes or the clutches differently?  My concern is for the pumps on the unit, they are hydraulic pumps not so much auto trans style PDP but more like a conventional hydraulic, will the ATF be enough to lube them properly and have the viscosity to keep wear down?

While working as mechanic at the Caterpillar agents, HD6 Merv pulled down a Hyster tractor winch after many thousands of hours hard use on high production logging which had been run with ATF from new. He said all gears were like new, still had machining marks on them. No doubt whatsoever that ATF has excellent anti wear properties. It also keeps the compartments cleaner than any other oil, and cooler than any other oil as it has the most effective heat dispursant properties.

ATF was developed as a hydraulic fluid for transmissions where they use to have both a front and rear pump to supply pressure to the servo pistons and the lubrication of the planetary gears as well as bands and the converter.
Type A , Type F, designations were for the clutch packs and the amount of grab or hold these units had.
As far as using it in other hyd systems - for years it was the fluid used in power steering pumps and other systems as it had anti-foam and anti-wear qualities.
