I had a 7040 PST apart many moons ago with 8,000 hrs on it and just resealed/regasketed it and replaced all the C2 clutch discs (reverse). The only reason we even did it was the engine was out of frame for an complete OH and we were half-way there to do the tranny, so we did.

I've seen a variety of failures over the years.Usually they are a very trouble free transmission. These transmissions have been updated over the years from the 7040 & 7060's in the mid 1970's.By the time of the 8000 series, they were pretty bulletproof. This particular tractor is relatively low houred (under 5000).The piece in the third picture sets into the housing in the first picture and is supported by two tapered timken bearings. The large nut that screws onto the hub and sets the rolling torque had unscrewed. When this happened, the steel sealing rings that go in the grooves become stuck, which then lets three different clutch packs starving for oil .The clutch packs aren't "burnt up",just not enough oil to pressurize them. There are six clutch packs in there, and you need two engaged at one time to make a gear. The tractor would only move in 2nd gear. While this is not a common problem,I have seen it on several occasions. Most of this repair will just be gaskets and seals, but if you have to replace some hard parts, then the cost gets quite a bit higher.--Especially new parts.
