After trying to ferris wheel bolt out both directions unsuccessfully I reconed it was dremel time. Air grinder with 3/8 bit like the Doctor said. I helt a similar bolt to the hole and marked 3 points if the hex head; every other one. We ground the threads back in those 3 places and after vacuuming and flushing like a dentist would do Ian gave her a mighty tug and out she came with him tumbling to the ground! It is indeed one of those grade8 carrier bolts. I have flushed the gears and cavity with diesel. I ran the drain hole plug in all the way tight with my FINGERS! No kidding, the dremel tool kicked but and didnt harm the threads that are left. So now I am off to get bearings, seals, orings, etc.    The reason the ferris wheel wouldnt work is the bolt bept catching and I couldn't turn the ax. We have inspected the bull and pinion and all looks well, some wear but no chips, dings, or broken teeth at all. Thanks to all for suggestions and support and Dr Allis thank you for the tip on wallowing out some threads so the head would clear. When threading in the plug so I could flush the system, it doesn't wiggle or wallow at all. Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Capt Dana |

You do have less strength. I'd think about making a soft copper or aluminum gasket if not a neoprene gasket. Interrupted threads are how the breach of many a howitzer has a dozen threads to hold the pressure, yet takes only a quarter or 1/3 turn to lock. Gerald J. |

| Captain, I see you have it out now, but did you try real heavy sticky grease and applied it the gear? Then shove bolt up into the grease with the head hanging over the side of the gear on which ever side would have been the greater clearance, then rotate to pinion gear area and take out. At least that would have been what I would have tried... or ran a wire down with a loop and fished it out..ah,er, tried to fish it out. |

| JC yeah I spent hours fishing. The bull gear leaves hardly any room. I had the ferris wheel deal with grease jammed from the front which was the shortest distance;scared me so that I was glad several times to get it back to the bottom. When I tried from the back it wouldn't get to or past that 90* [3:00] position. After just so long I concluded this was crazy, I could spend forever messing with this thing in the 90* sun. Gerald I hope I dont need howitzer breech strength here. It seems to have a good gasket but I can get a thicker and softer one and even safety wire. I took a sawzall and grinder so next time I need to remove brake housing it will lift right off and out of the way. |
