Guys - My 1958 HD6 G is finally home. Whoo hoo! Working my way through the systems and found the oil bath air cleaner had about a quart of water inside.  Looks like I need to consider a retrofit because the inner mesh is all rust.  It has oxidized to the point that the side of the housing is rusted through as well.

Two questions:

1. Would it be better to find a good oil bath filter to replace? Or,
2. Should I consider a retrofit by gutting the old mesh and size an dry element air filter to put inside to make it into a dry element air filter.

Wondering if the later 6's had a dry element air cleaner equipped.  Any help appreciated. Thank-you! Orangeman

Ok - I got the oil bath filter cleaned up, only the bottom portion of the wire mesh was bad so removed it and replaced it with new wire mesh from Farm Family store.  One side has a small area that is rusted through so will cut that out and weld in a piece of stainless.

Guess I stay with the oil bath for now.   I did see some later HD 6's that looked like they had a dry element filter mounted behind the valve cover.

Made good progress today, replaced all the bolts on the final drive and steering clutch covers.

BTW where is the key switch located on the early HD6's?

The one I am working on is a a 1958 I was thinking tit should be on the dash.

The key switch is on the dash below the light switch but I don't think the 1958 had one. If it survived there might be a battery disconnect in the battery box. My newest HD6G has the foot starter switch.

I have 1 with the key switch mounted in the batterybox to the left side of the seat.
