Subject: RC Camshaft Removal

I am in the process of rebuilding an RC engine.  I have the crank out and can't get the camshaft out.  I have the engine up side down and all the lifters are down.  The shaft comes out about a 1/2 inch then locks up and won't move.  Is there anything which should hold the shaft in?

The oil pump isn't off yet.  Does it need to be removed first?

Well upon review of the parts book, I may be wrong, it doesn't look like the pump is camshaft driven.  There is however a pin in the back end of the camshaft, at the far back bearing journal, maybe it is dropping down.

Just a thought, your engine doesn't happen to have a fuel pump does it? Some power units had a FP and probably is driven off the cam.

The oil pump is driven off the back of the camshaft.  There are just three bolts holding the oil pump to the rear of the block, with those removed the oil pump should come off, then you would see if that was what was holding it.

If it is a tractor engine, oil pump is driven from the back of the cam shaft by a drive pin thru the camshaft. Orange's suggestion is the most likely culprit. The lobes will catch the bearings on the way out; the cam has to be manuvered some to avoid lobe hangup and to line up the races and bearings on the way out (and in).

Nothing to hold it up except the lobes like Greg said. Sounds like a first time cam removal for you. If it is you might want to hit youtube for cam removal. I think I saw one in there a few years back. Watching it done is better than trying to type something in terms you might not understand.  Removing a camshaft is something you want to do with great care to keep from damaging the bearings. Takes two hands to keep from cocking it.

       If I'am thinking rite, the pressure regulating/relief valve is in the cam somewhere. Careful you don't loose the ball and spring. At least I think maybe I thinking of a continetal.

Not until the D10 thru D15.
 The pressure relief valve for this one is in the stem of the oil pump.  You could loose the brass plunger and spring that holds the cam back on the oil pump stem slot.
