I have been studying the gear chart on page 31 of my 78/79 manual trying to get my population dialed in on 32,000.  According to the gears I have on the planter now (9-drive 10-driven) I should be planting 31,600.  According to my records for the past several years it seems I am actually planting 29,000-30,000.  I have already verified I have the listed rubber drive wheel on the planter, I am using the right size 45-pocket seed disc and I believe the blowers are in good order.

I can't explain the discrepancy but I figured I will just bump the charted population 2,000 to 34,000 and then I should land in the 32,000 actual.  My problem is the gear chart on page 31 makes a huge jump from 32,800 to 35,100, jumping right past the 34,000 I am trying to hit.  Any reason for this big jump?

I don't know your soil type but I have my corn planted to about 34,000.

My 78 units were never exactly on the money, but going by the monitor should be right on the money. Make certain that you know the exact speed you are travelling at when going by the monitor, though. Out here "west of the river", we only seed around 20,000 seeds per acre, though, so if I was off by the same percentage as you, it wouldn't be such a drastic number of seeds per acre. Darrel

Unfortunately I have a non-counting monitor so I am just going by the number of bags I use at 80,000 seeds per bag.  I just don't understand why the charts have such a large skip in the range that is more critical around here?

I have no idea why the big jump. And I really can't understand why you are off so far from the rate chart. You are using the rate chart that corresponds with your row spacing, right?  Darrel

Yes, I am looking at the right chart (I don't mind the question).  Reguardless of that the jump exists in every spacing option, just at different population points depending on the row spacing.
