Very good Austin. Do you know what kind of paint they painted with in those days?
Thanks
Mike

"four minutes for two men to paint a unit"  No wonder the tractors look better than new when they are re-painted by you experts.
I know Pop would be REALLY SURPRISED to see the outstanding paint and careful application that goes into restoring a tractor.
Also, notice they paint the tractors with the tin on - not off like you all do.
Good Luck!
Bill Long
ps:  Thanks for putting the article up.  Have not gotten mine yet.

It seems like from old pictures I have seen that some parts were already painted when they put the tractor together. I suppose that made it easier to paint that way. It would be neat to compare brand new one from back then to restored one now.

One of the guys in the B&W photos thinning the paint is wearing a Dupont hat, perhaps that's the brand they used.

Southern States had different colors? That is the first I ever heard of that! I was in the Fisher Body Plant in Norwood, Ohio in 1970 and they had water running down the walls in the paint area, too while they were painting new Camaro and Firebirds. I thought that was unusual, but maybe that was the norm. Thanks for the article, that was very interesting.

Neat pictures of the B being painted.

They were still using the water wall process when I worked for New Holland back in the mid 80's, but today it is fluid bed, powder coat or dip painting because of the VOC levels associated with spray painting on such a grand scale.

It is amazing how little technology changed in the factories for all those years, then the world turned upside down in the 90's.

I will have to put more of these articles up. There were ones talking about the post war roto baler production and it had a picture of a prototype model. Lots of neat stuff.

I'm surprised to see the tail light under the seat on that B and I noticed the next in line had no headlight holes. What do you think that is in the crank start hole in the second to last pic? Thanks for the pics. Austin this is very neat.

I don't know how it worked, but I believe that is the lifting device for the front half of the tractor.

I think you are right. There was an automated rail that moved the tractors along. It looks like a support that came down from that chain that probably carried the "B's" down the line.
