thinking of tearing into the c to figure out why the pedestal has so much slop in it. it feels like there is way to much backlash between the gears. also, you can turn the wheel much further one way than the other. is that normal?

I can understand too much backlash making it loose but it seems that if it turns more one way than the other, then one of the arms were maybe put on a spline off or something. Could be on the steering gear or the pedestal depending on what year and style the pedestal is. Just a guess.

Yes. The gears can get off a cog if someone is not careful during re-assembly. I have been a someone before.
