Need advice on cleaning out an out fuel tank with goey crud on bottom - thinking of putting a gallon of used carb cleaner and letting it soak. Any comments / suggestions welcome

Second question applies to a different tank which is clean with minimal rust - what tank prep and liner is best in these days of alcoholic gas. Not planning to use alcoholic gas if i can help it, but who knows what future will bring.

Probably a gallon of laquer thinner would be cheaper than carb cleaner and would do as good a job. I am partial to the red-kote liner. They claim that alcohol will not hurt their liner. Excellent directions on their web site.

I will 2nd the red-kote....If you want nothing but pure fuel in the sediment bowl, use this stuff. Was thinkin about that the other day, looking at the sed. bowl on the WC

I have used red-kote in the D-12 for about 12 years now. Still looks like the day I put it in. Have to use Corn-a-hole gas here, cant get any other. Since you are doing a fuel tank, make sure you replace any rubber fuel lines with metal.

I start with oven cleaner if there is a lot of old fuel turn to tar this seems to loose and help remove and clean the tank the best i have had to do this with my last 3 tanks.

Then i like POR 15 they have a 3 step system i flow the directions done at least 12 tanks with there system good results.

Also if there is a lot of rust i use muriatic acid be carefull if the tank is bad it will eat through the tank and do not get any on you.

I had to use this only once.

Make sure your tank is completly dry before you use the sealer.

I have used the Red-Kote for several years and had good results. If I get a tank that is really dirty I will clean it out with Muratic acid, be careful not to breath it, strong stuff. Also rinse it out good and made sure it is dry before using the Red-Kote.

I used POR-15 on my one-seventy about 6-7 years ago. No issues with it.

I swear by POR-15. Have used it in numerous tanks and have never had a problem. Very easy to use and reasonably priced.

Most people use HCL acid for rust removal Muriatic Acid ( inhibited ) will remove the rust and will attack the base steel also over time. Problem is the fumes given off can be a real irritant. You can also use Sulfuric Acid for the rust removal it's a little slower but less funes. Only problem is it's hard on clothes .

Several good tank liners out there just be sure they will stand up to the alcohol.

Acetone works pretty good on the gooey part, then I let it dry and vacuum as much of the loose rust out as I can after the log chain in the tank tarp strapped to the rear wheel trick. Then I use a new sediment bowl with the little nipple on it that sticks up into the tank a bit, or modify the original with a short piece of copper tubing. Can't run the tank dry, but the system has been trouble free so far. (20 plus years)

Thanks for the inputs - its RedKote or POR-15. I think local O'Reillys has RedKote in gallons for $55 - so that may be quickest option once I get goop out.

How big is your tank? I bought a quart of red-kote for the tank on my WD45 and I put two coats in it and didn't use the whole quart.
