Hi! My brother has a 1978 allis chalmers 716H lawn and garden tractor. It appears that the motor is running in reverse, and when you mow with it it won't kick the grass out to the side. Has anyone else had this problem and how can this be corrected?
Thanks! Dana

sounds more like belt on wrong somewhere and blades are spinning opposite direction than they are supposed to

The belt from the tractor to the mower deck is probably on backwards. I'm pretty sure I did that with Dad's mowers more than once. Look at how the belt is strung and take it off and flip the twist over on the pulley at the mower deck. Some of the later tractors had a decal to show how it should be strung.

Does it go forward when in a forward gear? I heard of people talking about a 4 cycle engine running backwards but I don't see how it could. Probably belts.

A four stroke gas engine won't run in reverse, a gas two stroke will as that is how many golf carts were configured. I have twice  stalled  my Kubota diesel , pushed in the clutch at the wrong moment and had it run backwards for a few seconds, they will run in reverse but I don't think they would for long as the oil pump won't work in reversed rotation.
As others have said, check your belt routing. ... Gary

Belt direction and the other thing might be : I sharpened a set of blades for guy , he came back about a hour later and said it cut worse than before , asked which way he put blades on , he had them up-side-down on spindle.

If the tractor moves forward when mowing, the belt to the dack is twisted wrong.
If the motor was running backwards, you would have to put the tractor in reverse to go forward. Bob
