pulled my sticky starter (52CA - looks original) and freed it up some... now considering adding a little lubrication on the shaft. choices are powdered graphite (like used in door locks) or very light oil. in other applications i've found any liquid eventually becomes mud. any recommendations?

20 wt motor oil that is what is was supposed to have.

Oil for the bearings, NOT for the bendix shaft. Graphite will work.

yeah, that's what i meant charlie - a little very local lubrication at the bearings.

and ted, yeah, i figured reservoir oil would get transferred to the gear via the flywheel.

actually just getting it out and rotating & slding the innards has loosened it up considerably - plus gave me a chance to check for excess wear - looks very good to go!

i wish some of the automotive starters i've run into were half as durable!!!

as always - thanks guys for good advice.

lots of this is new territory for me and i care more about my 52CA then i have about any car i've ever had,,, so probably very overcautious going forward here. but definitely proceeding nonetheless!

When I started working on my starter for the G, it was tight. I took it apart and cleaned the bearing with brake cleaner and lubricated them and now it works fine. Bob
