No offense just an observation. If I had to leave orange and pick another it would be Ford. Grew up driving a 9N, Fordson Power Major and a 971 Select-O-Speed. Allis is still better.

The true Fords are not a good sudsitute to a Allis. The Genisis must have been design by a chiropractor that was trying to drum up more business.  I drove one on and off last fall and after a few days I could not put my own shoes on. I bought a FW 30  recently and I reassure myself that I really bought a undercover Steiger.

A Ford 6000 Commander was almost our first project tractor. If that would have been the case I wouldn't be here saying that I am an Allis-Chalmers fan. A friend of ours who is in tractor sales said that the select-o-speed on the 6000 was junk and notorious for breaking, so we got a D-17 instead! YAY!

If I had to change and was buying new equipment it would be Ford also. If I just had to change old equipment it would have to be Oliver.

Even though I am a true AC fan, when it comes down to business I will buy what makes sense.  Right now I would like a tractor with a modern cab, reliability, lower cost, and  a close dealer for parts and service. Ford fits that bill. If I had $$$$ it would be JD. Now if I had no common sense, I would go buy that 6070 that the guy wants $23,000 for......

Yup, the select-o-speed transmissions in the Fords are notorious for breaking. The TA's in the Farmalls are notorious for breaking. The transmissions in the AC D series are notorious for jumping out of gear. They all have their achilles heel, ya just gotta pick your poison.

Well, I suppose jumping out of gear is better than breaking all together....I'll go with AC. ;)

If folks would operate them correctly, they would not jump out of gear, that comes with mis-treatment, do your wife that way and she will CLEAN YOU OUT !!!

Are you talking brand new which would be New Holland which is Fiat. Fiat owns Case New Holland (CNH) Or are you talking a newer tractor but still a Ford?

There's much truth to that statement, but it's almost certain that all tractors receive the same mistreatment in shifting as the ACs, and few other brands have the jumping out of gear problems that the ACs do.  There's a reason for that.

That's true but every tractor has it's problems. If it jumps out of gear fix it just like IH folks fix a TA or JD folks fix the syncro shift etc etc. Just like people there isn't one that is perfect.

That is a very true statement. If you treat anything right, operate and service it as your supposed to it will take care of you in the long run.

If I was to chose another brand besides AC it would be Oliver. I really don't have a favorite after that just as long as it is not a MF.

have been viewing the ford select o speed threads. i was always led to believe that the slider, jd introduced, was in fact a version of the ford selecto that jd paid a licensing fee to ford for its use. any arguement?....tp  studer. wooster, ohio.

The way it was presented on an IPTV video a few years ago, the chief engineer of Ford in the SOS era refused to sign off on that transmission being of the opinion it was not designed well enough for production. He was overruled by management and they parted company. He went to work for Deere and designed the Power Shift transmission to be sturdy and to not have the faults of the SOS. Whether JD paid license fees, I don't know. That video used to be on the Deere Waterloo works web page. He stayed with Deere the rest of his working life. While cables are involved in the SOS shifting, all the shifting in the PS is hydraulic.

We have had a couple Of Ford 6000 with the select-o-speed in them, ran them hard, they were very easy on fuel, very handy, and never had a lick of transmission problems.  I would love to have another one on the farm.... They were some of the best tractors we have had.

Never had a Ford or Ferguson until a customer had me restore his TO-30. It was a cool little tractor. Since I am a tractor picker when not working on someone else's, I try to buy what people are buying, and the Ford N series, especially the 8N sell as fast as I can flip them. Now granted I am not making top dollar on them, nor do I give them a show finish, just fix what's wrong, clean them up and paint them with nice single stage enamel. Keeps the cost down and gives the customer a nice looking and cheap work horse.
