330 Planter Configurations?

I am getting ready for spring planting I would like to resolve one of my many long-time questions. The background info is I have a 330 (2-bar), 4-row, 30" spacing, airchamp planter with what I think has #78 planting units. All the instructions in the manual I have dealing with population planting rates refer to changing the gearing on the common drive shaft. The interesting thing is I do not have a common drive shaft for the planter and my units are individual driven off the rear packing wheel of each unit.

First question was it common for these 330's to come either common drive shaft or individual drive?

Would a manual for the 78 planting unit give me the necessary info to adjust the planting population?

I'll look tomorrow but I might have a good operator's manual if you are wanting one. I have that same planter but it is common drive. I also have a 6x30 333 with unit drive. If I don't have a good spare book I can give you the figures in the books I use to change population for the unit drive. Do you have all the sprockets?

Lonn, I bought a used set of sprockets in 2008 from R. V. Schmitz in WI which contains 16, 20, 24, 26, 30 & 36 tooth sprockets. I am not sure if what is on the planter itself is any different. Am I missing any?

Does the 78 planting unit manual contain those charts? If so I would be interested in one.

sure, the 77 or 78 planter rate chart will be accurate. Match tire options to factor up or down.

Looking again at my 330 manual it shows a few limited photos labled as a 78 or 79 unit, but not of the same side. There are also many unlabeled pictures, but none that specifcally call out a 77 unit. How does one tell the difference between the 77, 78 & 79 units? At least it seems the 78 or 79 looks similar to what I have.

Have seen the 330 and MF640 with both type's of drive's. Model 78/79 differ in the seed opening the 79 had a runner type opener the 78 uses a dubble disk type. The seed rate chart's are the same for both with a 18"x7" drive tire. If you have all of those sprockets then you have the rite one's for any of the rate's on the chart. If you have a 12 on the drive and 14 on the driven the rate is 30100 seeds per. ac. on 30" corn hope this helps too.

My planter has double disc openers so it sounds right with my initial guess of a 78 unit. I am assuming a 77 must be quite different?

The 77 Air champ uses flat chain instead of roller chain. The 77 was available with a double disk/runner combination or a runner opener. JCinPA

I took a look at the corn planter and found the following things. The planter units had the flat style chain going to the drive wheel. There are serial numebr tags on each planter unit and the number on one unit tag was (78 20551). I know what was said about flat chain but the seial number really makes we think it is a 78 unit. There must be quite a few gear options in addition to the used gears I listed above. The units had a 18 & 20 gear on them and above someone mentioned options of 12 & 14.

OK, my 330 books all show just a common drive. I have a manual for #78 and #79 units showing sprocket set up for population on unit drive. My book only shows roller chain no flat chain so I'm not sure how accurate my book would be. It's also my only book for the 333 I have so no spare. Depending on your tire size but with a 18" x 7" two 10 or two 14 tooth sprockets get you a corn population of 35,100 at 30" rows. Use a 14 driving and 15 driven for 32,800 pop. Thats with the 45 pocket disc which is your corn disc.

Beans use the 144 pocket disc. For 174,700 at 30" rows use 14 tooth driving and 9 driven. 160,400 use 20 driving 14 driven. And so on. I could try to scan these pages some time for you. These sprockets are for the 2040 chain but you might have sprockets for 40 chain so then for example your 14 tooth in the book becomes a 28 tooth. You can calculate for steel packing wheels or 5 1/2" wide tires.

BTW if your 18 and 20 tooth sprockets will fit #40 chain then they are the same as a 9 and 10 tooth sprockets listed in the book. Either will work for #2040 chain.

The difference between the 77 and the 78 units are the the flat chain and roller chain. the 77 unit will have a metal cover over the seed disc which the 78 does not have.
