The manual would say 30 for summer, 10 for winter, non detergent. Because that's what they had. Today a good 10W30 will be better year round and keep the engine cleaner inside. If it has only had non detergent, it may need a couple short time oil changes to remove most of the sludge characteristic on non detergent oil. Besides detergent, modern oils have anti corrosion additives the help preserve the bearing inserts. That's for the engine. I don't know what the driveline expected.

Manual says SAE 20W. I've been using good quality hydraulic oil in both of my G's for years without problems. Don't forget to drain both holes on the tranny/hyd. housing.

So, if you put in SAE 30W, and it was winter, the oil pressure would be high then?

A 30 weight (there is no 30w) in the winter would make for higher oil pressure--------if you can get it to crank fast enough to start.  It would also make for slow lubrication to the bearings and cam.

As another pointed out, there weren't multi-weight oils back in the 40's or early 50's.

Depending on starting temps and condition of the engine, I would use Mobil 1 15w-50 for temps above 20 degrees and if the engine was a little worn.  For starting at temps below about 20 degrees (or an engine in good condition), I would use their Turbo Diesel 5w-40 oil (it is also rated for gas engine use).

With either of these oils and 100-200 hours per year use, you would only need to change once a year and have good starting and quick lubrication, but a heavier viscosity at operating temps.  The heavier viscosity would help out with a worn engine and oil burning.

As for the hydraulics, most any ISO 32 rated oil should be fine.
